Tark, I really appreciated your input on the mics. I am currently in the market for a mic that I can carry around and use to randomly record my two children so I can use the voice files in videos and slide shows I plan to make to document their early lives. I would love portable as well as quality. I'm not asking for much, am I. 🙂
These recordings will be close up as well as at a distance, indoor and out. From your reviews and experience, The Belkin Universal adapter sounds like it is the most versatile as far as sound quality with the ipod, But I would think not as convenient to carry around due to you have to have a separate mic. I know the adapter and mic are both small but if I'm seriously going to carry this around everywhere, I'm thinking the mic cord part could be kind of a hassle. Berkin has a new mic called the Tune Talk that looks interesting. Not as sturdy or as convenient to carry around as the Griffin I-Talk but I'm assuming by the looks of it, might deliver a good recording. Thoughts on this? I also assume when apple lifts the 8 khz limit the quality of recording on the ipod will increase, right.

Any thoughts?

thanks

Joe

I've read in (I belive both) Mac Addict and MacWorld that the limit is not existant under LInux on the iPod. I can't recall the links or the process, but I'm pretty sure you can Google Linux on iPod and come up with it.

I've got the little Belkin mic that plugs into the top (it's the first mic that came out). It's been hit and miss. I had originally hoped to use it for the same purpose you're describing. It's so hard to get video of my older son since he's so aware of the camera. The still plus audio seemed like a good option.

Joe,

its been a while since I saw this post, glad you found it useful.

I noticed with the refreshed iPod line (now with video support) that Apple provides the following improvements to audio recording quality.
Voice recording settings:
Low (22.05 KHz, mono)
High (44.1 KHz, stereo)

Unfortunatly, for the video iPod, Apple has done away with the remote-doohicky-jack that was on the side of the headphone jack.
All the iPod mic adapters I was reviewing have the remote doohickey and would NOT work with the new video iPods.

I assume we can look forward to a new line-up of audio imput devices for the video iPod in the months to come!

Does anyone know if a standard mic will work directly with the new video iPod, or does it need an accessory interface?

and also...glad that someone brought this up... does anyone know if there are going to be any updates that bring that functionality to the ipod photos? is there anyone from apple that comments on these forums? it's already been proven that the hardware exists and that it is limited only by the firmware...i would feel pretty bad if apple just simply decided not to support it as i only got mine like 3 weeks ago and here they come out with bigger and better for the same price (ugh!) anyone with any info would be much appreciated...thanx 🙂

I think what might be cool is a mic on an armeture that can be swung up and pointed toward the source of sound. If the mic was on an arm, it might not pick up so much desk noise.
Ideally, the mic could be swung back down into an enclosure that protects the mic when not in use. Ideally there won't be any hanging cords to get tangled or jerked.
Swapable mic heads might be nice so that you could record directtionally or omidirectionally.

It would be nice to also have a line-in so you could attach a different mic if needed. Also a gain control would be nice (assuming this can't be controlled automatically by the unit itself).
