AIM 2.0 update for iPhone...sending IM's to text

Same problem here with my 3GS and AIM for iPhone.

Clearly this is false advertising on AOLs part. This feature simply does not work! You want me to pay $2.99 for you app, too? You gotta be kidding me.

Sorry, AOL guy, your help didn't help. We're all trying everything logical and yet your software still is useless in this regard.

In all fairness to AOL, the have a free version that does everything that the pay version does...just includes some advertising.

I'm sure the SMS thing is a bug and will be resolved.

I just wanted to add that I'm having this problem as well. I got it to work for one or two numbers but it hasn't worked since. I'd really like to use this app for texting, so an update would be great.

I'm wondering...is this something we are supposed to setup in the desktop version of AIM? I ask because I was having the same problem trying it from there as well. Just a thought.

FYI - I tried SMS using Beejive/Yahoo and it worked great.

Hey everyone, I figured it out. You need to go to your AIM preferences (I used the desktop version), got to the privacy settings, and make sure you allow all users (don't block user groups of any kind).

The other thing I did was added my buddies' mobile phone # to their profile and sent texts that way. Make sense?

Well I'll be ******. That would explain why it seems like half the folks here are having no issues.
I turned on my "Who Can Contact Me?" to "allow all users to contact me" via the desktop app... and now I can send.

hallelujah, but that's still kind of a usability screw up on AIM's part. There's no mention of this in the error given, there's no way to change this setting on the mobile app, etc.

Whatever. Good luck to everyone else banging their heads against the wall trying to figure this one out!

Yup, this worked for me. I actually just figured out and came to tell. When I tried to send a text to myself with the desktop version it gave an error message saying I needed to change my privacy settings. After I changed them to allow all to contact me it works great. Now I can lower my texting plan and save some $$$$.
