so i bought one of these imac g3's for my first mac. it is bondi blue and it has a front loading cd-rom drive. so far i really like it. i am running 9.2.2 on it right now. i know its a LITTLE outdated lol but i have one major complaint... i can't surf the internet very well. most of the web pages are scattered all over the place and i can't view them normally. any suggestions? i tried downloading mozilla but i think i downloaded the binary one, even when it was running, i didn't see a difference. should i upgrade os's? i am not sure how much my little memory can hold! please help!
That should be a "regular" CD, with Icons of files and folders in it. It can be read by any version of Mac OS.
So if you insert it with OS 9 running, it should mount its Icon on the desktop, and you should be able to see files when you open that icon. One of the files is named "Install Mac OS X", and clicking on it is another good way to start the Installation process.
i do not have a problem with my internet... i am on the computer now. i am just having trouble viewing today's webpages (facebook, hotmail, myspace, yahoo... ect) so i got the 10.2 disc, it ran beautifully on my clamshell but this imac is giving me problems. if any one uses os9 and has NO problem viewing current webpages, please give me a holler. when i insert the installation disk after 9.2 boots, i follow it to the folder and click on the installation icon. it prompts me to restart the computer. as i do so, it will take forever to boot, spit the disk back at me, and take forever to load anything. eventually it will load os9 agian. should i use an external cd-rom drive to complete the install? i have no problem with os9, other than the fact that i can't view current webpages... i do not want to use 8 browsers to view one web page.
As well as OS 9 not having any up-to-date browsers to display modern web-pages, there is one other thing you should be aware of :
OS 9 and dial-up work great together, but broadband can cause connection problems.
OS X and broadband work great together, but dial-up has been known to cause connection problems.
Perhaps you have been running OS 9 ok with broadband? But even a change of machine and/or modem and/or ISP can make something that worked fine before, suddenly not work at all. Just be aware of this...
yeah, its all up to date and can handle it. its my stupid mistake; i used the same disk that i used on the clamshell to load onto the imac. one user license... gosh.. i didn't even think; i was so giddy to get it up and running. i wish i could find a decent version of 10.3
If what you have is a white "Full Retail" Mac OS X 10.2 CD with Jaguar fur on the X, that is an ethical and licensing dilemma, not a technical dilemma.
"Full Retail" Mac OS X 10.2 CDs do not have an interlock at the Installation level.
If you have grey CDs for a specific Mac, they may not install at all on a different Mac.
If the disc works in the clamshell, but doesn't work in the iMac, it may be the iBook-specific version of Mac OS. Is the disk white with an orange 9 in the middle, or a gray CD that says iBook on it?
You were lucky it worked at all in the clamshell. In days gone by, Apple laptops used a different version of Finder and other System files too - you simply could not have made it happen. So I'm quite surprised you got an iMac install disk to work in your iBook.
However that doesn't explain why your iMac disks didn't work in the iMac. They are the original disks for that particular machine, right? Or at least, the correct ones for that model?
okay. well i put os9 back on my clamshell... i dont want to break the law lol. and for the imac, it's not the disk that came with the computer but it doesn't specify which version of the computer it will work with. it's a retail disk, so... i don't understand why its not working
