IBM Model M Keyboards

Unicomp Keyboard Products (pckeyboard.com) is continuing the manufacture of the legendary IBM Model M keyboard. (See articles at

I was wondering if anyone has any experience using this KB with a modern Mac computer. I make a lot of typos on the alum/white KB that came with my year and a half old iMac. I'm considering ordering one from Unicomp.

20" iMac alum, 2.4 GHz, 2 GB, Mac OS X (10.4.11)

I do: I've been using a Unicomp Customizer, which is made on the same equipment as the Model Ms once were, for a few years and wrote extensively about using Model Ms on a Mac here: http://jseliger.com/2008/05/07/product-review-unicomp-customizer-keyboard . Note that if you Google "Model M Mac" you'll also find a variety of other information on the subject.

FYI - There is a Mac-oriented keyboard that uses the same type of "IBM" keys.

I use Apple's own "legendary" Apple Extended Keyboard II, which is an ADB keyboard connected to USB using Griffin Tech's iMate. The iMate is only supposed to be compatible up to 10.3.9, but I've been using it through Tiger and Leopard, with both PowerPC and Intel Macs, and it has worked fine with no driver needed. Note: The iMate has a small wafer battery inside; I don't know its purpose, but if it wears out, the iMate stops working (it's a standard type battery you can buy a RadioShack). This old keyboard definitely improves my typing, compared to the new laptop-like aluminum keyboards and the older "soft" too springy plastic keyboards.

Funny you mention that: I've used one and suspect that Matias has tarnished its name sufficiently to convince it to skip making a successor. See this post:

for more, including two photos of its shoddy construction.

Stick with Unicomp or the old-school Extended IIs.
