Connecting a MacBook Pro to a Sharp Aquos LCD TV 42D43U (Display)

I can currently have a new MacBook Pro (Aluminum) with 2.93 GHz and a Sharp Aquos LCD TV. I want to connect it to the TV to view my videos. I am aware of there being no audio through the Mini Displayport. I have connected it via Mini Displayport to DVI, DVI to HDMI. Then RCA going to the back of the TV. I am getting the video portion, but no audio. I have read the manual and forums, but no solutions have been thrown out. This link shows someone having the same problem as I. Any suggestions?

Travis is correct. You should contact Sharp if you can find nothing in the manual, or in the menu of the TV.

What you need to do is tell the TV to play the audio coming in through port 1 (as example) when it is showing the video from port 2 (again an example). I would try another input to see if it might be pre-configured with another set matched. On my Samsung, HDMI 2 has it's own rca inputs for audio, specifically for this purpose. I run a mac mini as a media server / dvr.

If there is no way to map via the TV menu, you could test other configurations - leave the audio plugged in and try the other hdmi, or leave the hdmi and change around the audio.

Hi there, welcome to Apple Discussions!

It is most likely a video/audio pairing problem with the TV. The TV is expecting audio to come through the HDMI cable you've plugged in, but of course there is no audio through that connection. Depending on your TV, it may or may not be possible to map an analog audio source to a specific HDMI plug. That's what you'd need to do. If your TV has a DVI-in plug, it may be more friendly to the analog audio source because it won't expect audio on that video input.

Also, if you have a home theater receiver, you could plug the RCA into that and run that for sound.

I do see Analog Audio Output, would that be the one your referring to?

Hmm, no, that's likely a catch-all audio output that's designed to output whatever audio the TV is playing to some other device. I took a look at the specs on the TV and it appears there is only 1 analog audio in. So you'll have to leave the RCA plugs there. Perhaps another HDMI port would be able to be mapped to that audio-in. Sometimes these TV inputs are setup pretty weirdly.

If you've played around with all the settings on the TV for inputs... perhaps there is not a way to map the analog audio source to an HDMI video source. It's entirely possible that they never included this feature...

Hi, I this is my first Mac.

Forgive me if I am I am posting this wrong. I am still learning how to get around and setting up.

I watch MLB over the internet, through my dvi/hdmi2. I have been trying to get the audio to come out of my Samsung tv, and or Samsung home theatre to no avail. I have tried the toslink with the adapter. I am not sure how to hookup the audio cables and which ones to use.

I saw that Jake11 has a Samsung. Can someone tell me what I am doing wrong? I have been fiddling with this for a couple of weeks. Am I better off to just by external speakers? It is getting quite frustrating. Thanks for any help you can give.

Hi Elaine,

The TV could be tricky to get audio out of if you are using a DVI to HDMI adaptor to connect to the TV. Is that what you're attempting to do? The problem with that is that the TV will be expecting audio on that HDMI cable, and it may not be possible to "map" another audio input to an HDMI input. Some TVs will have a DVI input, with an associated "DVI Audio-In" input that is "mapped" to the DVI picture, because DVI will only carry video.

You should be more successful if you connect the MBP to your home theatre directly. If the home theatre has a toslink input, you should connect the toslink cable between the MBP and the home theatre, and then set the home theatre to the appropriate input. You should get audio through that without problems.

Hi Travis,

I thought I had tried connecting the toslink from my mbp to my home theatre. Anyway it was a success.

If anyone is interested.

This was hooked up to a Samsung 46" tv and Samsung home theatre system.

I connected the mini display port to the DVI adapter on my MBP, which connected to the hdmi2/dvi source on my tv . (It did have a audio source for the dvi input.) But i opted for the optical cable.

I then connected the toslink to my MBP and the home theatre.

By the way, I love my MBP, and the apple forum. You guys rock!

Alright ladies and gents, your saviour is here. After months of searching forums for answers and reading manuals I just decided to screw around with the settings on the tv and here is what I figured out. You need two things like everyone else says the mini dvi-hdmi or whatever and the 3.5mm - dual RCA plug. You plug the mini dvi-hdmi into INPUT 4, then connect the rca to the INPUT 4 R AND L audio just below it. Turn your tv to INPUT 4 and you should have a picture (my macbook does is automatically). Now here's the tricky part: Grab your remote and press the menu button, then go all the way over to the "OPTION" menu. Go down to HDMI SETUP and hit enter. Now, go down to AUDIO SELECT at the very bottom of the 3 options. Hit enter and scroll over to ANALOG (via audio L/R) and hit enter and then you should have sound and video! Yayyyyyyyyyy. Enjoy.

I hooked mine to our Aquos through the DVI-HDMI into our Input 6, which also has a separate Audio for Input 6. For the audio, I used the RCA adapter I have for my iPod. I just plug them into the Mac and choose what I have defined under Input 6 in my TV's menu.

I don't remember selecting anything special on the TV, though I don't have a home theater (just speakers plugged into the TV for manual use) so that might make a difference (and our TV is 2 years old, which is probably why I don't see an "HDMI setup").

I have a 40" Aquos LCD and had the same issues. On my model, it turns out that you need to use INPUT #6. Underneath it, there's a headphone jack input. Connect into it using a cord with headphone (mini) jacks on both ends. Put the HDMI input (from a DVI-to-HDMI) into that slot. Then under "Setup," click "PC Audio Select" and switch to "Input 6 (HDMI)." That should do it.

I had issues because my cable box was originally in the Input #6 slot. This is the only slot on this TV with a corresponding audio input. Looks like it was made for just this circumstance. Also, I originally tried to connect the audio by going into the various RCA inputs on the back. It turns out you just need the headphone-to-headphone cord instead, though.
