image capture rotation

I know this isn't an iPhoto question, but I don't know where else to post about it. I have recently started using Image Capture instead of iPhoto because I do not use any of iPhoto's editing features, I only need to capture the pictures to my hard drive, and I do not like how iPhoto makes so many files for the same picture sometimes. Anyway, the vertical pictures that I import using Image Capture are horizontal in the Finder, but when I open them in Preview they open vertically. This would be fine, but when I want to use an image for anything else (my desktop, for example) it keeps it as horizontal. Is there anyway to make this work? The only work around I have found is opening it in Photoshop and then saving it again. I do not want to have go through all of that over and over just to get my pictures to work properly on my desktop. Any advice? Thanks.

It seems that this is the same bug like within iPhoto 5.

Within this thread the iPhoto bug is exactly described.

I used the feedback channel to report this bug but I don't know how long it will take to solve the problem.

As a workaround you can import your photos with GraphicConverter.

The original photo is in the landscape orientation with information imbedded in it to let applications that can read it to display it in the portrait orientation. Not all application can interpret that rotation data to display it correctly. So you will need an application that can do a jpg 90 degree rotate of the entire file. Then from then on all applications will display it as intended.

Do a search at VersionTracker.com for "image rotate" and you'll get several candidates that can do the job.

But of course the current version of Image Capture has this bug like iPhoto had. I did all my "downloads" of thousands of pictures from the same camera during the last years with no problems. The trouble began with Tiger's version of Image Capture. With former versions of Image Capture I never had problems and all my applications (PhotoShop, InDesign, Preview, Acrobat, different web applications and so on) opened the pictures correctly.

With GraphicConverter you can download the pictures (and videos and soundfiles) from camera in the right way and the will not be corrupted after download.
When you already have corrupted pictures from Image Capture you can remove the double orientation tag with GraphicConverter or rotate the pictures lossless.
