TIFF Files Not Importing!! Help!!

I have a whole batch of Photoshop illustrations (NOT photos) that are in TIFF format. each one is about 20MB each, and for some reason i cannot load them into iPhoto, nor can I open them in Preview.

any thoughts as to why this is? I want to put the drawings together and order a book using iPhoto 5, but obviously I can't get them in.

I CAN convert them to JPEG and they load in fine and look correct, but i'm afraid i'm going to lose crucial color data by compressing them.

Help! any thoughts, solutions, or shoulders to pout on?

That's surprising. I thought they would be alphanumerically listed like the Finder. Many applications, including the Finder, sort alphanumerically by defrault which is all right if you've named your photos with than in mind. I don't have an iPod so am unfamiliar with it's capabilities. As I name my files with iView according to the capture date and using the international data format, YYYY-MM-DD-01.jpt, etc., I don't have a problem with the default alphanumerical sorting issue.

I just did an experiment with 20 images in 3 dated folders. in iPhoto, about a quarter of the tiffs are basically black rectangles because of the alpha channels. However, once these are synced to the iPod, they appear just fine.

So iPhoto will just be an intermediate step in backing up to my iPod. I like the idea of the iPod because unlike my little firewire disk, I can actually see the images on the iPod.

I too name my files YYYY MMDD.tif. The key for me is to ignore the iPod folders as they appear on the Desktop (sorted by creation dates) and focus on how they appear in the iPod UI -- correctly sorted into year folders that I made in iPhoto.

So, iPhoto tif = alpha channel knockout
iPod tif = visible image
