Sudden Motion Sensor - Anyone else hearing it?

Recently got a new 15" Macbook Pro with the 320gb 7200 rpm hard drive.
Something that's a bit worrying is that I can hear the sudden motion sensor activating. In my previous MBP, which is about 2 years old, I couldn't hear it activate at all.
Also, I've got the new MBP on a stand to raise it up. However almost every time I knock the desk it's on, the SMS activates. Sometimes it doesn't need much force to activate at all.
I'm wondering if this is likely to decrease the life of the hard drive as it's parking the head unnecessarily so often?
Thanks
Chris

I can confirm that I have the same issue with a brand new MacBook Pro 13-inch, mid-2009 model. The clicking sound is quite disturbing, I never had a SMS+head parking that was so loud. The drive is Hitachi HTS545025B9SA02 and I'm using the latest software available.

Another issue that is even worse, is that sometimes it fails to shutdown, just stays with the wallpaper for minutes until it turns the screen off (standby), as moving the mouse wakes it up in the same state. I can move the mouse and see the various shutdown modes by pressing the power button. I eventually have to force a shutdown with a long press of the shutdown button. The weird part is that I cannot associate this issue with an application or an update and it is intermittent.

This is what the console log says:

I'd appreciate if someone more experienced could suggest a likely cause and maybe a fix. I'd hate to have switched from Windows exactly for these kinds of quirks and still have a crappy experience.

I realize these are "premium" i.e. expensive machines... but, I have had a few in the past five years, no problems.. I rec'd mine today with 2.93 GHZ CPU, ann the 320 GB drive referenced in these posts. Frankly, if mine goes south, I'll pony up the $80.00 for a seagate momentus 7200.4 G. There is no way I'm giving up this sexy baby because of a "unreliable/annoying" HD... And I also have an IBM T61.. no comparison to the Mac, my poor IBM just sits in the corner...

Unfortunately it seems that Apple has not acknowledged issues (SMS, head parking noise, freezes) with the 13 inch MacBook Hitachi drives - their recently released firmware fix refuses to install.

Capacity: 232.89 GB
Model: Hitachi HTS545025B9SA02
Revision: PB2AC60Q
Serial Number: 090606PBC20YQSH01J3H
