How to control the new shuffle if you don't want to use the incl. earphones

How do you control the new iPod shuffle if you dont want to use the included earphones? Apple earphones is below standard when it comes to sound quality, so I would like to use another brand. But then you don't have the remote, so how do you control the shuffle then. Will it start playing the second you turn it from off to one of the two other states?

you can't. it's impossible without apple earbud with remote now. that's why it is so stupid.

thanks for that info--ive got an Apple store less than a mile from the house and they open in an hour. I'll head over there to see if i can get another 2GB 2nd gen before they are gone.

Insert ANY non apple headset, flip switch from off to shuffle or continuous and the iPod will begin playing.

Apple is selling reconditioned silver 2GB Shuffle (2nd generation) for $39.

They have been selling for those prices (when available) for a long time. They are not always available, but they are now, in several colors even.

Adapters will be popular in the near term. But if all the new earbuds have controls on them already, they will become less necessary.
