localhost site not rendering

Hello all,
I'm not sure if this is the best forum, but it seemed like the closest fit. I'm doing a bit of developing, just a small community site. My problem is that when I attempt to view the site (held locally on my G5) all I get is the html. It refuses to render. This happens in Firefox, Opera, and Safari. I'm a bit new to the Mac, so I'm sure that it's operator error, I just can't figure it out. The code is valid through w3C. I developed the original rough on a university server and validated it, so it's not the code. Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

Thanks for any help.
James

Well, I may have figured it out on my own. Naturally, I continued researching after I posted and it seems that I have to set up my Mac to serve webpages. It's not complicated to open up the control panel and enable Personal Web Sharing, but I'm wondering why. On my Windows machine, I simply click any locally stored .hmtl document and the browser renders it. I have IE7, FireFox, and Safari on my PC and they all render the pages. On my Mac, I still get just code (unless I enable Personal Web Sharing, which I haven't had a chance to try yet).

My new question is: "Is there an advantage to the method Mac uses?" It seems much simpler to let the browser render the page than to actually have to run my personal Mac as a local web server.

Thanks again!
