Mail is killing the processes on my server with IMAP

Why is mail over running my server with IMAP processes?

I've had to start killing the process like crazy cause it was causing other services on my website to fail.

i contact support for Hostgator and they asked if i was using Mac Mail. i said yes, and he said, yeah mac mail does that. what's that suppose to mean?

it really hasn't happened in the past, why now?

Has anyone found a fix for this. I too use hostgator and have been very pleased with them. The apple mail program leaves the IMAP processes open and it causes my limit of running processes to overflow rather quickly.

Host Gator support suggested upgrading to a virtual or dedicated server to get around the process limits, but stated that the problem appeared to be with apple mail leaving these connections open. They said that they haven't had any issues with other mail programs - only apple mail.

Any thoughts? This is taking my sites down - getting a 500 internal error and loosing access to my sites when my email program is online. Once I shut down apple mail - my sites come back online.

Thanks!

Tim
