Importing Cd's With iTunes 8.1 - Taking forever

Hello,

I have just updated to the new version of iTunes 8.1 and seem to be having some problems importing CD's. Its taking forever to import as I tried importing the new U2 album and it took about 45 minutes.

I've had a look at the import settings and its set to AAC Encoder and setting iTunes Plus, which I have not changed.

Is anybody having the same problems or know what is causing the problem?

WOW. Unable to burn CDs is beating this thread by 7,000.

Anyone else thinking something's broke in the import/export functionality. With no experience to speak of I am guessing the iTunes Plus setting. We all noticed that as new right?

3 hours later and track # 5 of 11 is 2/3 of the way done. Good thing I only buy CDs once every six months.

WOW!!! I wondered what that was. I had spent 3 hours importing 5 songs and then 10 minutes later it was done. Hmmm... well, but now I can't get iTunes to respond to my prompt to minimize. Memory leak somewhere here fellas

This helped me. Until Apple fixes the problem, this method works the best. Thanks for sharing. Saves what hair I have left.

I'm having the same problem. I wish I'd seen these posts before installing this new version.
Will using Windows System Restore points from before this install take my system to the previous version of iTunes?

I'm a new user to Itunes 8.1. After experiencing very slow import speeds under XP I tried your suggestion. Launching in safe mode (holding ctrl-shift) made very little change in import speed; from 0.1 - 0.6X to maybe 0.2 - 0.7X. Process Explorer showed Itunes was eating 85% of the CPU.

Just minimizing the Itunes window boosted the speed on my older computer to 5.0 -8.0X.

I have had trouble importing cd's mainly older ones say 15 years or more. Cd's are in great shape, starts to import then stops about 4 seconds in and freezes up computer. Dont have a clue what is causing this, went to local applestore and they were no help.

Same problem here... I primarily buy CDs then import them to my iTunes/iPod. Since I installed the "upgraded" version (8.1), my drive speed to import has been reduced from 20-24x to 6-10x. Very disappointing.

I haven't tried burning any CDs yet, but I see that's going to be a problem as well from another thread.

One question since I don't know too much... what's the benefit of 256 vs. 128?

256 is supposed to have better sound than 128, but my aging ears don't really hear the difference. Of course, one can store a lot more content at 128; it works great for me.

Since the last update a couple of weeks ago nothing has changed. Importing still takes forever, minimizing itunes helps but this only works after ctrl alt del. When is Apple finally doing something about this obvious and annoying bug???? Makes me wonder why I paid 200 euros for this ipod in the first place!

Rip them as MP3s using WMP, then add them to the iTunes library.
Is that any faster?

I have just reinstalled itunes and now my cd's are not being recognised at all. It puts up each individual song title but each song is 758 minutes long!

That long track time means you need to update the drivers for the device

I have been trying to import my library from my old computer to my new. When moving the library from my ipod to the new computer it will freeze with 5GB remaining every time. I don't know if this problem is related, but...

It still plays and recognises cd's, it's just itunes not recognise them.
