resume from screensaver no login prompt

Sometimes when the macbook try's to come back to the login prompt after the screensaver only the mouse pointer can be seen the login prompt doesn't come up. Trying to press keys only results in a beeping sound.

Macbook late 2008, Mac OS X (10.5.6)

It could be that the program called loginwindow is confused. You can force quit it using Activity Monitor but first quit all running programs because it will in effect log you out and present you with a login screen. -GDF

The catch 22 of your solution is that if the person can't login, how can he get the forcequit menu to kill it...? 😉

You can ssh into the machine (assuming you've got another computer at hand, and that you've set up ssh access on the machine) then use the ps ax command to find loginwindow and then kill the pid, but as GDF mentions, this will also cause all other apps to close. Be forewarned that some apps don't seem to always reload properly for me when I have to do this.

I've had this problem on both my Mac Pro, and my MacBook Pro for quite some time. You can find some mostly unresolved posts along these lines from me here in the forums from quite a while back.

On laptops, one thing that is always recommended is to unplug all USB peripherals from the laptop before putting it to sleep, as sometimes the machine gets confused looking for devices it thinks should be on before it fully wakes up.

This is definitely an OS X bug that affects various hardware, and it is not fixed by 0s X 10.5.8 (just tried it).

Hope that helps about the peripherals.

I have encountered the same issue. If I go to another machine and ssh into my Mac and kill the screen saver process, this fixes the issue. I get a login prompt and the screen saver app restarts itself. Not a good work around, but the only one I have. It's better then a reboot, or sleep wake.

Apple, can we please get a fix, or at least a reply?

Thanks

Apple NEVER replies in these forums, NEVER. 😉

What is the name of the screensaver process? When I ssh in to my Mac Pro to try to get out of this situation, I can't find the screensaver, so I end up killing loginwindow which is, to me, an ugly solution, but it's better than actually reseting the machine by cycling the power switch.

I found this post on MacRumor's forums: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=541964

SOLUTION: Browse to Home>Library>Preferences and drag com.apple.systempreferences.plist to the desktop.

Caused by a corrupt user preferences file. On restart, you may find user settings have defaulted. Set up as desired.

Seems to have worked for me with short runs of screensaver enabled. I will have to see what happens overnight before I declare the problem solved on my machine, but I remain hopeful.

6 hours later and I was able to get the login prompt out of screensaver/screenlock, so I'm recommending this fix as an option to try for anyone having the problem. MOVE the preferences file to your desktop and confirm it fixes for you before deleting the offending file (in case the file wasn't really the offending one).

The only user preference I actually noticed losing was the hot corners assignments on my machine. Big deal, and easily reset.
