iMac G5 & new apple keyboard - some keys not working

I have an iMac G5 (2GHz, 20 inch), running OS X Tiger (10.4.11) and I recently purchased the new apple keyboard (the wired version without the numpad, to save desk space). I am finding that the function keys at the top don't work - specifically, the keys that control sound. I've googled this, and installed the Keyboard Software Update 1.2 that most people said fixed their problem - but it hasn't fixed mine.

Instead, the f10-f12 keys don't control the sound functions, but the f12 key ejects discs (it sits next to the eject button, so perhaps this is a wiring error?), and the caps lock key does not always work when hitting it - it needs a large amount of pressure. I would think that my keyboard was defective, but I just exchanged it yesterday, and the new one has the same problems. I'm getting close to just giving up and getting a refund.

If you have not done so already, go to:
System Preferences>Keyboard & Mouse>Keyboard Shortcuts
Double check the settings

"installed the Keyboard Software Update 1.2"
Did you repair permissions & restart you computer after updating?

Hello - thank you for the quick responses! To answer your question, yes, I have repaired my permissions and restarted, to no avail.

I have looked through the keyboard prefs quite a bit, and cannot find anything that allows me to choose where to map the sound keys. I have checked "Use All F1 F2 etc keys as standard function keys". In the small aluminum keyboards, the f keys are dual-function - in this case, the f10-f12 keys also control dashboard, etc, which I have turned off (but I have tested the keys with these options both off & on, with the fn key, without the fn key, etc - tried lots of combinations). I've tried quite a few things to get these keys to work. Honestly, the f1-f4 keys don't seem to work at all either.

I might try and take a video later today to show you what I mean. The caps lock key is the biggest thing that's bothering me - I use it instead of shift to type, and 75% of the type it does not activate when pressed...I would think this was just one bogus keyboard if it weren't for the fact that I already exchanged it once...

Oop, spoke to soon about the f1-f4 keys - was able to remap them so that f1 & f2 are indeed brightness, and f3 and f4 are expose and dashboard (after playing around in the dashboard & expose prefs). Still can't find out how to map the playback keys to f7-f9, or the sound controls to f10-f12 - and even so, my f12 still seems to want to eject most of the time anyway, so even if that's mapped right it'll probably have some problems....

Hey Miriam,

Thanks for the suggestion! Rifled around in Universal Access - wasn't able to get it to acknowledge the sound keys yet (the Hearing section has no option for it, and any advanced items lead to the Sound preferences pane, which also does not give any options). I might just go ahead and call Apple about this - it's sounding like a deeper issue than just prefs.

I did find out that my Capslock problem is because these keyboards have capslock avoidance - meant to prevent people who use shift from accidentally bumping capslock, it actually neuters people like me, who type using capslock instead of shift. It makes it so that caplock only activates when hit at a slower speed, so I have to very slowly and deliberately hit capslock, instead of just on the fly while typing. That might actually make or break this keyboard for me.

Thanks for all your help!

I have totally disabled the Caps Lock key because I was always hitting it by mistake when typing an a. It means I have to hold down the shift key when typing words that are all in caps, but the minor inconvenience is far outweighed by not having to go back and un-cap every word with an a in it.

Let me know what Apple come up with, please.

And you are welcome.
