Mighty Mouse Problem - Jerky And Jumpy

I seem to have developed a problem with my cordless Mighty Mouse in the past few days. It's become really erratic - seems to jump around the screen. When I'm moving the mouse to a certain position on the screen, it will just "jump" way over to one side for no apparent reason.

I cleaned the mouse, changed the batteries, checked all the settings. I made a few changes in the Keyboard and Mouse control panel and saved the changes (just to update the preference file) and then reverted back to the old settings. I've tried a different surface (you'd think that would be the main problem - the surface it's on - but that's not the case). Restarted numerous times. Ran YASU. Nothing changes - it just seems to be really "jerky" and "jumpy" all of a sudden.

Has anyone else had this happen and do you have any suggestions on how I can fix this problem? Is this maybe a defective mouse? I've had the mouse for 3 months now.

Maybe this is a system software problem? I haven't changed anything on my system in a few weeks - no updates or anything at all.

Thanks so much,
Gerard

I've tried actually talking to Apple in person MANY times and that didn't help me fix the problem, why would a bug report make any difference. The last person I spoke to in the genius bar told me that I was wrong to suggest that lots of other people are having the same problem with MM.

If this guy was such a smart alec, as he said he was, then he must know about this. So either he wasn't a smart alec, or there was something more to this issue and Apple doesn't know how to deal with it.

Nice catch!! I have been trying everything until I came across your thread. I am connecting from new iMac (that was plagued with freeze issues until the recent Firmware update posted this past weekend). I disconnected my mini port to DVI connector and mouse issue was resolved. Here's to a fix in 10.5.7!

I have a VA1912wb Viewsonic external monitor.

Thanks all!

Have the same problem, along with constant keyboard (and some mouse) disconnects. Here is the thread on the disconnect issue: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1731120&tstart=0

There is a definite issue here. The "fix" of switching from DVI to VGA is cute, but for me it is a non option -- the only way to connect to my 1080Px1920 Toshiba LCD is via a DVI to HDMI cable. (I also have an old Apple Cinema Display connected Display Port to DVI to ADC).

Bottom line, there is a bug at work here, and it needs to get fixed pronto.

Does anyone who experiences this problem also use the wireless keyboard?

I do, and for the next few days I am going to start using my computer without only the mouse and keyboard disconnected. When my mouse starts playing up it my keyboard seems to disconnect first, and the reconnect again.

So far my mouse has not caused any problems. If it is the keyboard, I will be out of warranty so I cannot technically get it replaced, however if it turns out that that is the source of the problem I intend to use my consumer rights to force apple to replace it.

Watch me.

I too have the disconnecting problem with bluetooth Apple Mighy Mouse (new iMac 2009 and 10.5.6). Simple solution when it disconnects : put iMac in sleep mode with Power button on the backside and immediately after that push any button of the keyboard to wake it up : mouse is working again.
I hoped problem would be resolved in 10.5.7 but when I read the specifications I can't find anything about this issue. I'll try 10.5.7 tomorrow.

I'd like to chime in here, too. The problem is even more noticable if you drag windows around the display. It really IS quite annoying.

- *Upgrading to 10.5.7 didn't help*. I've just completed the upgrade.

- Switching from the lower spec GPU to the better one didn't help either.

I get the same problem if I use the track pad, the bluetooth and usb mighty mice, and the crappy kensington usb mouse to drag windows around.

I've switched off bluetooth and wireless and it's still really bad.

Further to my last comment.

Currently, I'm using an HP w20 as my second display which is connected to the Mac using a mini display port to DVI converter bought from my local Apple store.

If I disconnect this, the mouse jerky problem goes away. Reconnect it and the reported shenanigans start again.

Will have to wait until I get home at the weekend to test this out with the Apple 24-inch external dock/display.

Can report back if there's any interest.
