Mighty Mouse Problem - Jerky And Jumpy

I seem to have developed a problem with my cordless Mighty Mouse in the past few days. It's become really erratic - seems to jump around the screen. When I'm moving the mouse to a certain position on the screen, it will just "jump" way over to one side for no apparent reason.

I cleaned the mouse, changed the batteries, checked all the settings. I made a few changes in the Keyboard and Mouse control panel and saved the changes (just to update the preference file) and then reverted back to the old settings. I've tried a different surface (you'd think that would be the main problem - the surface it's on - but that's not the case). Restarted numerous times. Ran YASU. Nothing changes - it just seems to be really "jerky" and "jumpy" all of a sudden.

Has anyone else had this happen and do you have any suggestions on how I can fix this problem? Is this maybe a defective mouse? I've had the mouse for 3 months now.

Maybe this is a system software problem? I haven't changed anything on my system in a few weeks - no updates or anything at all.

Thanks so much,
Gerard

A quick update to the jumpy mouse saga:

After a year of problems with a jumpy mouse (see videos below) *I purchased a Magic Mouse to see if the Magic Mouse would solve the jumpiness issue. It did but the tracking speed was very slow. Therefore, I installed MouseZoom to increase the tracking speed. After installing MouseZoom I started noticing the jumpy mouse problems again.*

_*This finding is very interesting!*_

_*It implies that the faster the mouse movement the more likely one is to see an erratic mouse with the pointer making unrequested jumps around the screen.*_

My hypothesis is that the operating system or processor is not allocating enough resources to the mouse if the tracking speed is set to a high level.

_*The "jumpy mouse" problem seems to be far worse when the hard disk is running - either copying or downloading a large file*_. Some users are reporting that watching a high resolution flash video will also cause the mouse to skip and jump.

I am certain the problem is software related because the same exact mouse works perfectly in Bootcamp 2.1 and Bootcamp 3.0 in Windows XP SP3.

_*Youtube now has two videos showing the problem*._ You can view the videos here:

If you are suffering from similar problems may I suggest three actions:

* Use the Quicktime X screen recording function to record a video of the problem.

* Post the video to YouTube.

* Contact Apple Care and share your video problem description with them.

* Send a note referencing the video and description to www.apple.com/feedback

I will update this video to let you know if the problem has been solved. I am hopeful that Apple will be able to find the source of the problem and solve it quickly. I really like my Mac and I can hardly wait for the problem to be resolved.

Here is hoping that 10.63 will resolve this issue once and for all!

Apple needs to understand that there is an issue with bluetooth mice on OSX.

The issue isn't just with bluetooth mice, it's with bluetooth itself in OS X. I have the jerky and jumpy Mighty Mouse problem as well, and past bluetooth updates that were supposed to fix the problem still haven't fixed it. I also have the wireless keyboard, and using both the Mighty Mouse and wireless keyboard together makes it almost impossible to use bluetooth headphones. Bluetooth in OS X doesn't seem to be able to stream audio reliably if a Mighty Mouse and wireless keyboard are in use. It's quite annoying.

This problem goes further then just bluetooth mice. it even goes further then specifically Apple mice!
I am using a microsoft wireless mobile mouse rightnow which is at the moment one of the mice that has the BEST tracking because of the new Bluetrack technology but even I am experiencing this problem a lot! there are times the mouse works perfectly but as said, when downloading files (things as small as Podcasts/Vidcasts) or when Copying files the mouse tracking starts to feel super weird!
It seems like a very small latency because it is invisible but I can still FEEL that the mouse feels different. I get instant RSI symptons when this is happening, my wrist starts to tingle & i get a sore forearm very quickly! so as small as it is this problem is actually affecting my health!!!!
I'm already going to a physiotherapist because of this problem it is that bad!!! SO PLEASE APPLE FIX THIS MOUSE DRIVER FOR ONCE & FOR ALL!!
seriously why can't they simply copy windows' mouse driver? it can't be THAT hard???

as been said in this thread, I have been using various mice & when used on a Mac they all got the same problem while they simply work well on windows!! (no matter what os!)

I found my problem. I have a 17" MacBook Pro and a 23" Apple Cinema display connected as secondary monitor. Lately I experienced jerky motion of my magic mouse. But by accident, I found that the minute I disconnet the 23" external monitor, the mouse motion stabilizes. I also found out that if I don't push the DVI connector of the 23" monitor tightly to the laptop, the slighest gap between the laptop and DVI connector can cause the magic mouse to be unstable. There must be some kind of electrical interference or RF noise that cause the mouse to go crazy. Since I push the DVI connector snuggly against the laptop, no problem at al.

I started my journey by trying to find a new mouse for my iMac as I was going mental with the poor performance of the Magic Mouse. Fortunately I've found people with this very same problem and I've focused my attention on resolving it.

1- Delete the files AppleMultitouchDriver.kext and AppleBluetoothMultitouch.kext from 'MacHd\system\library\extensions'

2- Restart

3- Install apple wireless mouse update 1.0 (can be download from apple's website)

4- Restart

5- It should be perfect now but do install the free MagicPrefs should you need extra tracking speed.

I hope this helps as it did for me.

I had a problem with jerky Magic Mouse using the built-in Bluetooth. I don't use AirPort, but I do have wireless running at my house. I use a USB keyboard. Since I have a 2006 Mac Pro I tried the wire swap recommended elsewhere, and it did definitely help. It's still not good enough for gaming but for casual use it's fine. If you have a Mac Pro (not iMac or laptop), you can try this if you're handy with disassembling computers (whole thing took me about 30 minutes).
