Preview - copied images are black

When I use the select tool in Preview to select text or a portion of a document, graphic or text to copy, when I paste that selection in another document, the pasted text block or image is black. I changed background color in Preview to white but that did not help. Any ideas anyone?
Thanks

Pasting text with text tool appears black on white. Pasting an area selected with the select tool produces the correct image except the background is black in Word, but is white when pasted into a TextEdit document. This appears to be some incompatibility between Word and Preview when using the select tool. I did the same exercise using Adobe Reader's (8.1.2) snapshot tool and the pasted image in Word does appear with a white background.

I think the difference is because in TIFFs, PCs & Macs use 0 & 1 opposite for B&W, and the Alpha Channel Mask.

When I pasted a Preview Copy of mixed text & Picture into Graphic Converter, the Picture was good, but the text was black on black... Flattened the Alpha Channel Mask and the text showed perfectly, black on white.

Selecting All & copying in Graphic Converter then pasted correctly into NeoOffice, which the previous pasting from Preview was black text on black.

Word most likely would work the same.
