iTunes 8.1 "Verifying iPod" bug?

Since 8.1 came out, pluggin in my IPod Touch results in iTunes freezing up and it unfreezes when it's unplugged. I left it plugged in anyway and after about 5 minutes iTunes unfroze and began "Verifying iPod." It takes way too long and no one is going to sit through this kind of delay every time you plug in your iPod. Is there any fix or workaround or explanation for this behaviour?

I've been having the same problem for a couple of weeks, ever since I installed 8.1. It started with iTunes freezing up and getting stuck on "Verifying iPod". I followed this discussion, and put my iPod Video,80gb in disc mode, and that seemed to solve it for a while. Then, today, when I plugged in my ipod, iTunes froze and I had to end task it. When I did that, my computer shut down unexpectedly. I restarted my computer, opened iTunes and plugged my iPod in again. This time iTunes said that my iPod might be corrupted and suggested that I restore it, or re-connect. I ejected the iPod from iTunes but it wouldn't quit showing the "Do not disconnect" screen. Finally I also manually ejected it from the computer and unplugged it. When I plugged it back in, iTunes once again suggested that I restore the iPod, so I did. Then I got an error message in iTunes saying that the iPod could not be restored. I ejected the iPod and reset it. The iPod seemed to be normal, all my files were still on it. I plugged the iPod in again, without putting it in disc mode, and after a long period of verification it is now working fine. Would someone from iTunes please answer this discussion? I'm afraid to plug in any of my iPods now for fear of losing huge quantities of time trying to get everything to work without erasing or permanently damaging my iPods. Thank you.

i'm also having this problem, the first time i connect my ipod touch and access itunes during a computer session, itunes freezes. after i disconnect, force quit out of itunes, re-access itunes and reconnect my ipod touch does the ipod touch show up and begin verification. this happens every time without failure.

i am no longer able to access itunes with my ipod touch already connected, i must access itunes first before i connect, otherwise itunes freezes.

i've reinstalled itunes, the ipod drivers and quicktime many times, this has not done anything. i can remember this starting when i updated itunes to version 8.1 though, before that i did not have this problem. any help here from the admins would be greatly appreciated

I have tried that. Reinstalling iTunes, only fixes the problem for a couple of syncs, then it's back to "verifying ipod". It has been now 2 weeks since I last was able to sync.

All I should need to do is to plug the cable and let it sync. All these work-around ideas are fine for a one time situation, but a big disappointment if I have to reinstall iTunes every week.

It's specifically an iTunes/iPod issue, not just with the touch.
I use multiple MP3 players on multiple machines, and I get this with an iPod 80GB occasionally.
It has some thing to do with Apple's intrusive way of making sure they validate you and your ipod before you can connect to itunes with it.
Mine started when I tried to add my own data folder to use for other things. It shouldn't affect anything else, at least it doesn't on any other player I've owned, but the iPod is fussy when you try to use it on multiple computers or do anything not specifically annointed by Apple.
I've found the best answer to be what was posted by another member. I go into my preferences and devices, and reset the sync history as described. Then I constantly try to eject it and tell it yes eject even though your busy, and then when it ejects and plugs back in it's OK.

Could you try, in exactly this order?
1. Make sure all auto sync options, and even automatically open itunes is disabled (if you have options with it unplugged, or are able to click on anything when it is).
2. Go to your preferences for devices and reset sync history.
3. The next time you plug it in, once iTunes sees it and starts trying to verify, gapless playback search or whatever, click to eject it and keep telling it yes even though it's busy do it anyway.
4. Wait until you get your non-busy ipod screen, unplug it, wait a minute, and plug it back in.

I have no idea if only one or all of that was necessary. That's what I tried based on the suggestions here, and it worked for me.

Good luck.

{\*\generator Msftedit 5.41.15.1507;}\viewkind4\uc1\pard\f0\fs20 Objectives for today:\par
\par
Build principles for solution building.\par
\par
A solution must match both its input and output in all time.\par
\par
When solution output or input is defined by a pattern, the input and output of a solution must meet that pattern.\par
\par
\par
Let's do some example problems to help:\par
\par
Cure cancer:\par
\par
Method 1:\par
\par
Model the cancer, by examining textbooks and conducting reseach to build an accurate model of cancer pathology.\par
\par
Find the root causes of cancer. Do this by building models downward from the cancer model until all of your causes are either modifiable or part of acceptable operation.\par
\par
Use the model of a cancerous body to develop models of a cancer free body. Test the models for safety, starting with the most feasible.\par
\par
Develop a plan to implement the model.\par
\par
Test the model.\par
\par
\par
\par
What do I know about cancer?\par
\par
It is caused by mutations in the genome or viral compounds which cause cells to multiply uncontrollably.\par
\par
Many cancer cells use anaerobic respiration, thus increasing the acidity of their surroundings.\par
\par
If cancer cells cannot multiply, then they cannot spread and can thus be easily eliminated.\par
\par
Drug research is inhibited by extreme difficulty and expense in developing drugs, and by government regulations on testing requirements for such drugs.\par
\par
If we can easily synthesize any organize compound, then we can easily cure cancer, since research will be conducted far more rapidly.\par
\par
Some cancer can be cured by the immune system, if it can be taught to recognize it, since many cancer cells express different molecules on their surface than normal cells.\par
\par
Cancers exist in many different kinds of tissue, and are fundamentally different in each type.\par
\par
A cancer cell is like a parasite, like a fundamentally different kind of organism which lives inside the body. It has different DNA than the body. It has different cell behavior. It comes in many different species.\par
\par
A cancer cell, if matched with a predator, would meet the requirements of the predator-prey equations.\par
\par
Chemotherapy works by targeting all cells, but targeting rapidly dividing cells more effectively.\par
