MacBook Battery Won't Charge...Get "Not Charging"
Anyone have new info on this...frustrated...battery is just over a year old.
iMac 20" Intel (Early 2006); PowerBook Pro 17", MacBook, iPhone 2G, iPhone 3G, Mac OS X (10.5.4)
iMac 20" Intel (Early 2006); PowerBook Pro 17", MacBook, iPhone 2G, iPhone 3G, Mac OS X (10.5.4)
My old battery stopped working a while ago and I just bought a new one but it wont charge either. I may get the battery charging indicator for a bit then it turns off and I get the x over the battery.

Have similar problem. My Macbook battery wont charge. I have to keep it plugged in to run. I tried to use a known battery that works from my other Macbook which is the same. I get the same problem. I have to keep it plugged in to start & run. Once i unplug it. The Macbook shuts off. Any suggestions or solutions please let me know. Thanks.
Sounds like your charging assembly is bad. I would take it to an Apple store and see what they say. I replaced mine and I didn't have a problem after that.
I don't suggest your try to repair your macbook unless you know what you are doing. Opening it will void any warranty supplied by apple.
same problem, my Macbook only works when plugged in and charge light is always green. Bought couple of batteries, tried on still same problem. Took it to genuis bar and after a week i went back to collect it and I was told its the logic board which is causing the problem.
was it the same with you? my Macbook is out of warranty so they said it costs you around 200-300 pounds!
Well, it may not be the logic board. In most cases (if there isn't internal liquid damage) replacing the magsafe charging assembly and also the battery connection terminal will correct the issue. It's very simple in terms of difficulty of repair. I've done about 60 of these myself.
The problem is that continuous use of the magsafe charger will cause wear, and the circutry in the battery charging assembly can become damaged and fail over time. With these two issues the battery not working is fairly common.
I hope this answered you question.
Thanks for answering. Its definitely not the magsafe charging assembly coz at apple store they tried putting their's on and still showed the same thing plus they said they tried putting the battery connection terminal and it didn't work. They told me its logic board. For some reason I do't trust that information, to me I think they never tried putting the battery connection terminal.
btw how much a battery terminal cost? they asked 35 pounds for it if they fix it. I guess I have to buy one from ebay and try fixing it my self and see what happens.
any other reason it could be?
thanks in advance for all ur help.
Can a power surge/outtage have any effect on charging? I don't see anything physically wrong just that it won't charge...but with another charger I still get the same problem. Also if there was a water spill on it over a year ago would it still be a possible reason for it not to charge considering that it has been working flawlessly up until the problem came up? Thanks.
I've got the same problem: my macbook pro's (2008 model) battery slowly started only charging to 60%, then it went to 33% and finally it said (not charging) permanently.
So I bought a replacement battery, thinking that was the problem.
Nope, a brand new Apple branded battery and I still have the same (not charging) message when plugged in to the magsafe adapter.
Went into a Next Byte store (as there are no Apple stores here in Adelaide) and was flat out told "bad luck" "there's nothing we can do about it". The girl behind the counter (Nicole - Rundle Mall Next Byte) was super unsupportive stating that it's an Apple issue, you need to take it up with them.
So, here I am Apple.
What's the deal here?
How can I have this obvious problem fixed without a store to visit in my part of this big country (Australia).
And further to that, how can an error like this be existing in the first place?
Thanks for taking the time with those replies and thoughts mate 🙂 Much appreciated.
I don't feel to happy about taking it apart myself, and the serial number only shows a # for me, so I can't find if I am still within warranty (but I seriously doubt it anyway).
What I will do is wait until I am in Sydney again next and take it into the Apple store - see what they think.
cheers again for your help 🙂
I have a new battery and it is still "not charging" with green light always on.
So far, this seems hopeless. I have done the YouTube fix removing the battery etc. and the various resets. what a mess. Guess I will return the new battery!

Thank you Jonathan for suggesting the SLAMMING the battery into the Macbook. It took 3 tries but now the battery is charging and the light is orange. Life is good again. I didn't want to return the battery I had just bought. It has 1 cycle count!
Same problem here...
The charger is brand new my little green LED on my charger keeps going on and off and when it does go on the battery status says "Not Charging." And this is a brand new battery too, I hate to spend the $80 on another battery... considering it is a brand new battery, it wasn't like this at home, I have two chargers, and the one at my house dosen't do this my spare charger will for some reason now. Never did before. It just started happening now after I took my Macbook Pro to my aunt and uncles house, So when I get home I will have to test this on my other charger at home... I would also hate to end up sending my Mac in too if/when I have to...

I had a similar problem (not charging) but noticed that one of the pins on my magsafe adapter wasn't fullyspringing up. With some tiny screwdrivers and magnets and a very sharp pushpin, I was able to get it to spring back up (note: definitely make sure you unplug it first!). If you google "magsafe pins stuck" you'll find plenty of links to search with numerous methods. Some people even say to hit it on the table or your hand a few times. Whatever works, right?
I've got the same problem (Battery - Not Charging), however, when I turn my laptop off and leave it plugged in over night it does charge... slowly. Managed to get it back to 92%.
You may like to try the same.
