LCD display for graphic designer/photographer

My Mac Pro two 2.26 GHz Quad Core should arrive in a couple of days. I'm now in the process of choosing a 22"-24" LCD display monitor. As I am not attracted to the Apple 24" display's glossy surface, I've narrowed display choices down to these:

1) EIZO CG222W 22.2" Widescreen LCD
2) NEC MultiSync 2490WUXi 24.1" Widescreen LCD

Anyone using or know anything about either of these? I understand they are popular with graphic artists and photographers, but I am particularly interested in learning of any compatibility issues with the early 2009 Mac Pro/OS 10.5.6. NEC's support website notes possible compatibility issue between its 2490WUXi SpectraView II calibration software and OS 10.5.6.

If I chose the NEC model, could I use another calibration software/colorimeter with it instead? If not, then I would just go with the EIZO.

I use the Eizo CG220 (a for-runner of the CG222), it is a fantastic monitor. My primary monitor for colour correction.

I have just purchased a 24" LED Cinema Display as a secondary monitor to connect to my MacBook Pro then to my Mac Pro when the HD4870 graphics card is delivered.

As for the Eizo, I calibrate using the iOne Display 2 and the Eizo Colour Navigator software (Eizo CG monitors have hardware calibration built into the monitor, hence the premium price). I can't say about the 2009 Mac Pro, but there's absolutely no issues running on 10.5.6 on a 2008 Mac Pro.

Side by side, the Eizo's colours are much richer and deeper than the 24" LED display, the difference of 14-bit colour depth display to an 8-bit colour depth display is obvious. The Eizo is capable of displaying the full Adobe Colour Gammut, the 24" LED is not.

Check Eizo's web site for compatibility details.

I am using a 2690WUXi2 and Spectraview II with an Eye One Pro. I also have an Apple 24 inch LED display. Both are being used with my 2009 Mac Pro 2.26 standard video card. No problems whatsoever. You will be amazed with the NEC monitor. It exceeded my expectations with ultra even color and brightness. It will come up to brightness in about 3 minutes with special circuitry that NEC provides. I originally profiled this monitor in PM 5 with excellent results, however Spectraview is even easier to use and more flexible. The NEC monitor is hard to find - I suggest looking on Amazon.

just got my two 26" NEC MultiSync LCD2690WUXi2 and hooked them up to a new nehalem mac pro with a radeon 4870. the monitors work perfectly. all i can say is wow. the color accuracy out of the box is great. the brightness uniformity is incredible. the blacks are really black and the whites are perfectly white. i've owned two 23" apple cinema displays and two 24" led cinema displays in the past, and these NECs look much better. very professional.

i do have two gripes with the 26" NEC MultiSync LCD2690WUXi2. its cased in some sort of plastic. the base is made from the same material. i'd rather have an aluminum casing and base like apple provides. the other grip is that there is a lot of flex where the actual panel attaches to the base. its a bit wobbly. this i don't like at all. they could have done something better with this. otherwise no other problems to report.

but all in all, the image on the screen is so good, that i won't complain anymore from this day forward. an absolutely stunning image on these screens. love em'!!

I hope you are in very cool climate or have great AC! The one thing I've really noticed about the 2690 is the amount of heat it dissipates. That's OK in winter but not on 100 degree days here in the MidSouth. I'll probably shut it off and use only the Apple LED display for general use during the dog days of summer. The Apple display runs significantly cooler than the NEC, but is not as accurate.

Yeah, I noticed that they do kick out some heat. Luckily the temp in the room is on the cooler side. But I really like these NEC displays. 4 year warranty standard with the option of an extra year. The uniformity in brightness. Great contrast and color. In depth menu. I'm really surprised to say that I like better than apple displays for the kind of work I do. I'm really happy with my purchase.

yep, now i'm having problems. arghhh!!!

my two brand new 26" NEC MultiSync LCD2690WUXi2 displays are not working with my new nehalem 8-core 2.26Ghz mac pro with radeon hd4870 graphics. They were working for a few days, but now they are not. when i start up my mac pro one of two things happen. either the monitor sits on a blue screen forever, or a message comes up on the monitor telling me that the dvi signal is lost, or that there is no dvi signal. i have two, one connect via dvi, and the other to the mini display port via apple adapter. both monitors exhibit the same phenomenon.

i'm gonna call apple right now.

apple tech support didn't say much when i called them. they really couldn't do anything. the issue was new to them. i guess i'm going to return these two 26" NEC MultiSync LCD2690WUXi2 displays. what can i do if they don't work with my new mac pro. what a pain.

not sure what i'm going to get. maybe a few apple 30-inchers. for the few days they worked with my mac pro, these NEC's were freakin awesome.

Well I finally decided on the Eizo CG222W. Set it up the other day and out of the box it is a beautiful thing! While I have not yet tried to calibrate, I plan to use Color Navigator with Eye One as well. I would like to advance my Photoshop skills now, so (1) color accuracy was essential and (2) I didn't want any potential bugs or problems. I was attracted to this model from the beginning (instinct). It was still within my budget and seemed to have no drawbacks, from what I've been able to learn.

Thanks for your input. It's good to hear about it from someone who has been using its equivalent for some time.

I'm glad to hear you're enjoying the 2690WUXi2 with no problems.

While I ended up purchasing an Eizo CG222W, I really like the NEC a lot. B&H Photo here in NYC has the 2690WUXi on display and it looks great. And it doesn't cost much more than it's 24" sister model. It's a good size - looks like you can work on a two-page spread nicely yet not too cumbersome.

I still may consider it in the future as a second monitor, should needs and budget allow. But I do want to see what happens with OS/driver updates, as I have heard others are having some problems.

Thanks.

Sorry to hear about your difficulties. When I was considering the NEC, I called to ask them about the SpectraView/OS 10.5.6 compatibility problem. They said that the OS 10.5.6 (apparently not 10.5.5) update somehow was preventing the SpectraView software from communicating with the monitor. I also called Apple and they didn't seem to be aware of this. When I told them what NEC had said, they could not guarantee that it would be fixed in a future OS update. That's when I decided to go with the Eizo CG222W. Of course, I won't feel home free until I try to calibrate it. I noticed some using Blue Eye Pro on Lacie were having problems also.

How did you make out? Did you return them and get the 30" ACDs?
