Edit shows black screen instead of photo

With a couple of my photos, when I double-click to edit I get a black screen with the edit bar below grayed out. They're JPEGs from my digital camera, the same as most of my other photos. I've been using iPhoto since version 5 without encountering this problem before. Any suggestions?

Terence, thank you for your suggestion. I've downloaded and installed the update, the only result being that the problematic JPEGs last for a moment longer on the edit screen before they disappear into blackness. The edit strip at the bottom of the screen still is grayed out, except for the Done and left/right arrows on the RHS.

Two further questions for you: if folk have been reporting good results on this issue, was that on an on-line forum and can you name it? Secondly, if Apple apparently has been working on the problem, how does one bring it to Apple's attention, apart from here?

Cheers, Ann

Yes it was and yes I can.

As I’m sure you recall from your careful reading of the Terms of Service you agreed to when you joined the Apple Discussions, this is a User to User forum. Apple aren’t here. They don’t promise to read anything here.

You're a good man, Terence Devlin, especially for pointing out "iPhoto menu -> Provide iPhoto Feedback".

Some of us are slow. In 25 years of Mac use, I had not woken up to that line on the App menu. I've provided my feedback to Apple.

A good man, even if you are too discrete to name the other on-line forum.

So, problem still unresolved.

Well I never said it was another internet forum, I said it was an internet forum - this one. Search you and you will see some folks fixed this issue with the 8.0.2 update.

To do a Rebuild:

Start with Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, faces or places for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.

Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

If that doesn’t work: A Manual Rebuild

To create and populate a new library:

Note this will give you a working library with the same pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, faces, places and books, calendars etc.

In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'

Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop

Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.

Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.

When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.

In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

Well I never said that I had not searched through the Apple Support discussions on the "edit screen black" issue before posted the first message in this thread.

To put it in less convoluted language, of course I searched through the iPhoto forums first before starting a new topic.

So, Terence, I'd still be grateful for your advice on how to find the other forum.

I am running 8.0.2 by the way, but the problem persists.

If upgrading to 8.0.2 didn’t work, then next option iDownload iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no faces, places, slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back. *

*Current Beta of iPhoto Library Manager may get the Faces and Places information. Check at the iPhoto Library Manager site.

I have had the same problem, and I think I have narrowed down the cause and workable solution (although not always ideal).

For me, the photos that show up blank (sometimes white, or gray), are photos that were previously edited using an earlier version of iPhoto. If you 'Revert to Original' from the >Photos menu, then you should be able to see the original photo and do your edits.

Unfortunately, with this method you lose your previous edits.

NOTE: I have previously gone through steps to rebuild and repair my library using the built in utilities by holding down command-option while launching iPhoto. So, I am not sure if the 'Revert to Original' method works on its own or in concert with repairing the library.

Hope this helps!

Hi Terrence, Richard, Guy, Ivan and others

Problem solved, for me at least.

Terrence, I had not heard of iPhoto Library Manager before this discussion as I have been happy enough with iPhoto Buddy. It does not have a Rebuild function though. Relieved to find that the free version of iPhoto Library Manager includes the Rebuild function.

Ivan, I could not Revert to Original because that was one of the options grayed out or not available while I had the black edit screen problem.

So iPhoto Library Manager's Rebuild function it was. This gave an error message to the effect that two of the photos in the Library with problems could not be rebuilt. Console would have the details but this app has been crashing as soon as I try to open it.

Never mind, I knew which two photos they were, and confirmed that they were not in the rebuild. Then I used the date and time data for the other photos in the same event to go searching for the faulty photos. The search was quick and the photos certainly were on my hard disk.

Somehow, iPhoto '09 had lost the links to the original photos although it was still able to display them.

Copying the missing photos to the Desktop then importing them back to their iPhoto Library worked just fine.

Thanks, Terrence in particular, for introducing iPhoto Library Manager to solve the problem,
Tundern
