Edit shows black screen instead of photo

With a couple of my photos, when I double-click to edit I get a black screen with the edit bar below grayed out. They're JPEGs from my digital camera, the same as most of my other photos. I've been using iPhoto since version 5 without encountering this problem before. Any suggestions?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.5.6), Intel Duo Core 15"

Terence, it's that Irish sense of humour again. Please name the other forum so that I can visit it and perhaps find the answer to my problem, still unanswered here. Thank you, Tundern.
