Convert WMV to MOV or MPEG

I'm trying to make a DVD of my old movie projects from my old Windows XP, which are in the .wmv format. In order to use them in iMovie or iDVD, I need to convert them to a Quicktime format.
Does anyone know of a free downloadable program I could use to convert .wmv files?

just to add to Craig's excellent hint:

indeed, since v0.8, the VLC is able to convert some .wmv; it has to be versions WMV1 and WMV2, not WMV3...

and:
VLC has no "export" button, you have to look in the import dialog (??), you'll find in the lower left a checkbox plus an options button... not really convenient, and it works just for some wmv...it is free, so give it a try

well, as I wrote often, way too much options in the PC world for me ;-))))

I'm not used to that Windows stuff... not my world.....

What really disappoints me is no ability to recommend MPEG Streamclip in this situation.
.........pfffff hahahah - Rick, your humo(u)r is very special, but my style...! ;-)))))

besides:
Grandmaster Lennart's classic "Prevent Mac Disasters..." has overrounded me by far! it's from 04...... so, keep an eye on THAT... 😉
