Convert WMV to MOV or MPEG

Does anyone know of a free downloadable program I could use to convert .wmv files?

Not free but Flip4Mac Player Pro at about $50 can do it.

Some say they've done this with VLC but it think it may depend on the variant of WMV.

just to add to Craig's excellent hint:

indeed, since v0.8, the VLC is able to convert some .wmv; it has to be versions WMV1 and WMV2, not WMV3...

and:
VLC has no "export" button, you have to look in the import dialog (??), you'll find in the lower left a checkbox plus an options button... not really convenient, and it works just for some wmv...it is free, so give it a try

well, as I wrote often, way too much options in the PC world for me ;-))))

-IF- you are goint to be converting a lot of Windows Media. Flip4Mac is invaluable.

Can't imagine unless they are Bill Gates' home movies that there is much WMV 1 and 2 out there. Since he is talking from XP as well. What really disappoints me is no ability to recommend MPEG Streamclip in this situation.

Grandmaster Lennart's classic "Prevent Mac Disasters..." has overrounded me by far! it's from 04...... so, keep an eye on THAT... 😉
