Is it possible to disable the launch of
/System/Library/Image Capture/Devices/PTPCamera.app

I tried to do it in the Image Capture preferences, but to no avail.

If it's not possible, then how to rename the bundle?

Mac OS X (10.5.6)

Yes you can. You can change this preference in either Aperture or iPhoto, just go into the preferences of either one of those applications and select the app that you want or none at all.

As an aside this is very annoying and should be a system preference and not controlled by an application.

I had already selected none, but to no avail.

And I agree it should be a system preference and we should be able to disable it.
