Is Toast worth buying?

someone recommended that I buy toast to export my FCP files to DVD? Why not just use compressor? Or just export as a QuickTime movie and import in DVDSTUDIOPro? Anyone have recommendations? I am working with 108060i -Nick

Mac OS X (10.5.4)

Prior to toast I only used iDVD. It's a huge step up in quality, and doesn't make you chose a corny homemade menu. I say go for it. Great for burning video TS folders, too, so you can back up your DVDs easily.

DVD Studio Pro is part of the FCS package...there is no need for toast. Compress for DVD with COMPRESSOR and then take into DVD SP. You can make a bare bones DVD or one with menus.

iDVD is the consumer app, DVD SP the professional one. No need to waste money on Toast. Unless you are going to a Rocky Horror Picture Show screening. Then it is essential.

If you'd like to burn DVD's that take full advantage of your resolution (1080) and use MPEG-4 Part 10, (AVCHD), so more video can fit on your BD, or BD stream on DVD or DL DVD, and have menus (even though corny), then Toast is the only solution I can think of.

another good reason fro toast is.. If you have video that is to large for the DVD even if you have dropped the bitrate in COMPRESSOR. You can have toast compress it further to fit on a DVD. Quality will suck but sometimes its handy.

As has already been stated, Toast isn't necessary ... but I've used it for years for a variety of tasks and find it a very flexible and indispensable burning utility.

I'm with David. I love Toast.

I'll never make a master with it, but when someone needs 10 copies of a DVD, Toast is a huge time saver over burning 10 in DVD Studio Pro. I burn the master in DVDSP, then set Toast to make 9 copies of that master. Toast has the option to burn more than one copy without having to build & mux it each time.

Toast can be used to create a DVD, but you it does not do standalone encoding of video footage for use in DVD SP

Use Compressor or BitVice, or even the Adobe Media Encoder for that.

That being said, Toast 9/10 is an essential tool with so many uses.

A big plus for Toast for me is verification - especially when going to a client when it is imperative that the disk is burned correctly. It has saved me grief and has helped me detect when my Superdrive was starting to wear down.

can Toast 10 convert AVCHD into the Panasonic ProHD format? Im after a higher bitrate than what I achieved when I Logged & Transfered my AVCHD from my SD Card reader, into ProRes.

If the answer to this question is YES.. I'll buy Toast 10!
