IChat Account Problems

Hey guys,

I have a problem with my iChat. For some reason, I cannot add any accounts to my iChat. Whenever I go into preferences -> accounts and then click the "+" button, nothing happens.

Hope you guys can help me solve this problem

I am having the same problem as the original person who started this board. When I go into Preferences/Accounts and click on "+" nothing pops up or happens. The only account that is shown is a Bonjour account and I don't even have one of those. I just created an AIM account and was trying to add it to my iChat accounts. I've gone through all of the things you told the original guy and as far as I can see everything was how it was supposed to be. Hope you can help!

Yes it is. However now my problem has changed completely. I uninstalled iChat on my computer and reinstalled it using my installation cds that came with my computer. So now I have version 4.0 of iChat even though I have Mac OS X 10.5.6. So I was reading other discussions and found where you said to reinstall the 10.5.6 including the combo one. I am currently doing that as I am typing so I will see if that works! I pray it does cause it is really frustrating!!!! I would like to point out that even in my 4.0 version I can see that my buddies are online using AIM. However, when I double click on there name one of three things happens. Either the whole iChat completely shuts down "unexpectedly", a screen comes up that is blank and says "No Chat", or I can type something to my buddy and they get it but I don't see that I sent it to them and when they reply I don't get their message.

Hopefully the new updates I am installing right now will solve all my problems though!

If you think of anything else just let me know and thank you so much for your Mac knowledge!!!!

In further support of Ralph's suggestion...

My Problem:
When trying to launch iChat for the first time under my son's user account I found the application to crash during the launch everytime. I deleted ichat.plists and ichat cache files, relogged in and still encountered the problem. Additional information is that other users on my system have been using iChat regularly without issues for a long time.

Issue identified:
The initial launch of iChat for any user account is a Welcome Screen that the user selects iChat Encryption or not. Apparently it is this initial launch code that conflicts with Parental Controls and results in a crash.

Solution:
Disable Parental controls for the user, open iChat (walking through the initial Welcome Screens) and then the user is set up and ready to use the program (no crashes anymore!).
I was then able to re-enable the Parental Controls for this user and iChat continues to work.

Interesting tidbit:
I have a family MobileMe account and all users sync across multiple computers. Three out of the four users have been working fine, while the one new user to iChat, I had to set up on both computers with the above solution steps for iChat to work for him on both computers.
