Canon iP4000 will not print wireless

Newbie Mac user here - love much of it but simple stuff seems quite complicated... so far.

Anyway looked through loads of posts and although I have moved this issue forward still can't print using wireless connection altho' can do using my Windows laptop no probs and can print via MacBook when USB connected. (PAHU hope you stay up late in Oz - could do with your help now !!)

Uninstalled the printer and started again, following loads of useful advice from you guys. When I go into Utility the printer is visible on USB (when connected) but no network options available (greyed out). I feel that if I can get this sorted it should enable me to print ... what step am I missing?

Doh ... good point Greg.

As mentioned the printer works ok when linked to Mac with the USB but I want it work via a Belkin Wireless Print Server which in itself, is attached by ethernet to a modem via router. The Sony Vaio I was using worked no probs on this - in fact still does.

Add a different printer. If you have it connected to the Dlink server, its presence should be broadcasting as an available printer.

The thing is that the Canon driver cannot print when it is not connected as USB, so instead add a printer, select it (or add its IP address as an IP printer). It probably will not be able to identify the driver when it searches - it may select "Cabon IJ Printer" - but if you do a manual search (click on "Print Using", choose "select a driver to use", and search for "ip4000") you should find that there is a CUPS Gutenprint driver for the ip4000.

I have an iP4300 and it works fine (though I should warn that the Gutenprint driver does not have the same quality results as using the Canon driver connected over USB, at least in my opinion.)

Hi there gdub66,

As mentioned by doogald, the Canon drivers cannot be used when you have the printer connected to a 3rd party printer server (except an Airport) or shared via Windows. With these types of connections, you have to use the Gutenprint drivers, which are included with a standard Leopard installation.

If the Belkin supports Bonjour, the printer model will be displayed in your Default browser view. If it doesn't, then you may have to check its documentation to see how you connect to it - probably by selecting IP > LPD and then entering an IP address for the print server and a queue name for the USB port.

With these details entered you can then browse for the Canon iP4000 - CUPS + Gutenprint v5.1.7 and then add.

Just one point to mention from your original post. The Network Settings tab is disabled because this model doesn't support network connections. This utility is generic for all models of Canon, so only those that support wired or wireless connections will have this button available after selecting the printer in the USB list.

Pahu and Doogald - thanks very much for your advice. Seemed to be going very well until I actually tried to print and then go the error message"remote host did not accept data file (32)". Restarted both printer server and MacBook but not joy. Anything else I should be trying?

The message sounds like a configuration problem with your print queue. Can you explain how you added the printer queue. Can you also reply with the model of the print server so I can check its manual.

Hi Guys - sorry not to get back to you sooner ... working away.

OK Print server is Belkin Wireless USB Print Server, Model F1UP0001,

Deleted all printers. Plugged in USB and pressed +. Found the printer and asked to id location so put in the IP address.

Then 2 printers become available 1 which can print when the USB is connected (labelled "Canon iP4000" - with print using Canon iP400 driver) the other (labelled with the IP address) which won't print with USB or wireless and throws up the not accept data file (32) message. Also when I go into the Print Queue section there is no Utility icon for this printer ????

Typing the IP address into location (a text field) won't get you there.

Like PAHU says, you must use the Gutenprint driver.

The print server manual says it supports TCP/IP raw - that equals IP > HP Jetdirect on OS X. (page 22 of manual)

In Print & Fax click +, select IP printer, select HP Jetdirect, enter IP address, select the Gutenprint driver. If your model doesn't show up, update your Gutenprint version here:

Hi gdub66,

It still sounds like you have a driver or network issue from the Mac to the Belkin. Also, your previous reply is a bit confusing so can you confirm the following questions.

1. The printer queue that shows the IP address. What is displayed for the model next to Kind in the right pane?

2. Open the Options & Supplies tab for this printer queue. Under the General tab, what does the URL: show after it? It should be something like "socket://172.17.14.59/?bidi"

3. Since the Windows laptop is working, what does it printer port show. Open the printer properties, select Port and then Configure Port. Is it using RAW and is the IP address the same for your reply to item 2 above?

Sorry for the quiz, but I think we're missing something pretty simple...

You can use the commercial application "printfab". You'll be able to use all the supported printers it lists, wirelessly, and with most or all of the features you expect.

3. Yep the IP address is the same - not sure what RAW is?

raw means TCP/IP raw port printing (that's what it's called on Windows) - On OS X it is called IP printer > HP Jetdirect protocol. In other words, NOT LPD.
(By the way, we always try Jetdirect/raw first because LPD requires you to enter the print server's queue name, which most people can't find in the manuals.)
