Just wan to add to this topic. Received my brand new MBP13" with 4 GB ram pre-installed a few days ago. The honeymoon ended last night. My MB froze while browsing with Safari, the cursor disappeared and it wouldn't react to anything other than forced power down. Upon restart I got kernel panic after a few sec. Another restart, same freeze after a few minutes (also while running Safari), etc.
This is absolutely ridiculous 😟 I haven't even managed to put any of my files or programs on it yet.
Do the new Performance Update! I was having beach balls and stalls 20 to 30 times a day and they were lasting 30 to 60 seconds each time. It was making my computer worthless. I ran the Performance Update 3 hours ago and restarted and haven't had a single beach ball, hesitation or stall since! I really, really, really hope this is the solution that we have all been waiting for. I'm going to give it 24 hours before I call it done!
Okay, its been almost 12 hours since I did the Performance Update and my mid 2009 17" uMBP is running like a champ! I have had this problem ever since I got this computer so I have never seen it run as it should and it is like a completely different computer! It is so much faster and smoother without hesitation, I believe that it even shuts down faster. I have now run Quicktime movies, VLC movies, iTunes music, I have streamed audio off the internet and not one hesitation or beach ball. I have also run Safari, Quicktime and iTunes at the same time and it is all running smoothly without any glitches. I wish Apple had been a little more forthcoming about this issue so we didn't have to sit around wondering what the problem was but thank goodness they did the update. I hope it works for everyone that has had the beach ball, hesitation and freeze issues!
Just an update.
I brought my MBP to the service - with express care since it was an other city where I live - and they changed my memory.
Since - 1 month - there was hang only once when I turned off my Mac. This seems to be unrelated to the previous problems.
I start to recover of being satisfied user.
(your list of compatible memories makes sense. Likely my service personal knew what they are doing. Apparently when I ordered my Mac with 4G of memory the guys created my configuration did not know.)
I reset PRAM, then Performance Update came from Apple, so downloaded and installed it. Worked beautifully for a week untill today. Got 2 Kernel Panics one after another. Here we go again...
Isn't this curious how Apple had to mention that the performance update was to address freezes reported "by a
small number of users"? :-/
My local Apple Store is shut till the end of October so taking it back on November the 1st.
Guess I won't be getting rid of my good old G4 any time soon after all. Very disappointed.
Just to say to you that I returned my machine to Apple Store. They changed my logic board and memory (4 GB). Since no freeze. My problem was very random and sparse in time.
Add me to the list of frustrated Macbook Pro (late Oct 2.4GHz) owners. I bought 4GB of Corsair RAM and have had the freezing problems since upgrading. Maxmem=3456 didn't work for me. I have been running with 3GB (2.75GB after the graphics card takes its mem)for a day and it's been perfect.
I'm not sure what to next. Do I take it to the apple store to get checked out - or is that a waste of time (and money)?
Add me to the list. Had it in for service to day, even made the trip from Denmark to Sweden, because the repair center was said to be the absolute best. The guy told me it would be a waste of time, since it was my Kinston RAM causing the problem.
Apple does not care. But maybe they should start testing their equipments performance - before letting it hit the stores, instead of just being obsessed with coming up with the new designs of the body.
This is my fifth Apple computer, not counting the ones my parents had when I was growing up. This is the fifth one with flaws. BAD ratio.
I will try running solely on the 9600 card, if that does not work - I give up...
I updated to Snow Leopard (10.6.2) and immediately had random freezing that required a hard reboot.
Apple replaced my motherboard - not only did this NOT fix the problem, it added random hard drive pinwheeling and screen flickering. Nice job Memphis.
Moments ago I got a lovely crash with iTunes going, so it's giving me a nice stutter effect as I force a reboot. This is with a completely fresh install of 10.6.2 on an erased drive.
Trying again at the Genius Bar tonight. Wondering how many times it'll take before they just issue a CRU.
Add me to this list. Bought my 13 inch Macbook pro in July 2009. There were hangs in iTunes and Quicktime since I got it. The Performance Update 1.0 gave me a flawless machine for about 6 weeks. Now it's back to hanging up all over the place on some days. On others it's perfect. Took it to the Apple Store and they had if for a few days, said they ran tests for several hours and couldn't reproduce the problem. So now I guess I have to ship it back and hope for the best.
Update: I added the 2 x 2GB Corsair RAM (that previously random froze) back into my Macbook Pro (late 2008) five days ago and it has not missed a beat - woohoo! Whether it was the EFI firmware update of December 2009 or not I'm not sure, but I'm happy (at last).
