Thanks for replying again, we must close it off, there are two independent cinemas here ten miles apart and our neighbour has only recently abandoned the carbon ark lamps, we were using them up to about 10 years ago!!!

That's "..carbon arc.." lamps, though as they did pretty much come out of the ark, perhaps your way of writing it is more accurate!

(..Until taken over a few years ago by a new outfit, the three-screen cinema at Truro, in Cornwall, still used carbon arcs ..and I think there are a few others dotted around - mainly in Scotland? - still using carbons. But - as your post suggests - if you've only recently abandoned carbons, maybe you're still on mono sound. If so, I'd seriously suggest upgrading your sound ..you could easily do it for a few hundred - not thousand - pounds.)

I had exactly the same problem with a Sony DCR-HC39E - I could control the camera from iMovie HD, but could not see (or import) any video. The solution - a replacement firewire cable for £3 on eBay. Now it works fine.
