VMware ESXi on Xserve?

Has anyone tried installing ESXi on an Apple Xserve? I know it's not on VMware's Hardware Compatibility List, but could it work? Any ideas of whether the RAID and Ethernet controllers are compatible?

Hi,

I have no idea if VMware ESXi install on an Xserve, but it installs just fine on my Mac Pro (early 2008). The only problem I had is that my target drive had a GPT partition table which is not supported by VMware ESXi. It would boot but I couldn't download the vm-client from it and the file would have zero k in length.

I rebooted in Mac OS X, opened Disk Utility and repartitioned the target drive using an MS DOS FAT partition table instead of a GPT partition table. I then reinstalled ESXi and I have since been able to install Windows Server 2008 on it and it seems to run faster than in Fusion. Only downside is that the Mac Pro is my main machine and I can't use Mac OS X on it when it's running ESXi... 🙂
