iTunes 8.1.1 destroyed all my program icons on Vista please help!

I did the upgrade to iTunes 8.1.1 and it caused all the program icons on my system to change to the iTunes icon and then no longer open the applications they are supposed to but instead open iTunes.

This is on desktop and start menu. So reading other peoples posts about this error I uninstalled which fixed the issue but when I reinstall iTunes it messes everything up again. So I tried downloading an older version of iTunes from another website and it wouldn't install. Does Apple provide links anywhere to older versions or do you know how to fix this issue from happening?

we can live in hope
It looks like a complete uninstall , clean of registry
and reinstall fixes most problems ....logically it should
but how many users would be comfortable hand cleaning the registry

Itunes will either work or it won't generally won't means radical surgery

Apple has really done it this time. They killed all the microsoft apps. NICE WORK! Is this corporate warfare or what ?

We need a fix pronto apple "GENIUSES"

The only thing that worked for me was a two day roll back pre-itunes 8.1.1

So if any one else has this problem it looks like going to this registry key
HKEY CURRENTUSER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.lnk
and deleting any value "should clear the problem"

Don't read into this more than is really happening. My assumption right now is that a programmer at Apple did something weird with the installer, and no one in QA (Quality Assurance) saw this issue before releasing ... There is no need to assume there is corporate warfare going on here.

easy, just start regedit, f3 for .lnk. Delete the entire .lnk key in the left panel. Now logoff and log on again.
Done!!!
