FIX for iPod Touch Home Button

Hi Everyone- first post.

I decided to register for this forum after finding a definitive 100% fix for a 1st gen iPod Touch 16gb home button unresponsive or nonfunctional.

1. Place 1 drop of rubbing alcohol on the home button.
2. Press the button repeatedly with pencil eraser making sure to get liquid into area surrounding button.
3. Dry off area with paper towel.
4. Press home button until it works again.

I was ready to buy a new one- and this was my last ditch effort. Now it works like new!

Hope this is helpful- be careful with the amount/type of liquid used- do not use water!!

Powerbook 12" 1.5ghz, Mac OS X (10.5.6), iPod Touch 16gb 1st gen

My daughter got an ipod touch 5G for christmas (our very first Apple product). All of a sudden the home button became stuck in the down position. I called Apple and was shocked by the response I got..."you're 34 days out of your 90 day warranty but if you want to purchase an extended warranty I can help you." WHAT? Is this how Apple supports its products?! I was flabbergasted! Gotta tell ya, NOT impressed with Apple, it's customer service OR it's products! Why in the world should a home button stick after only 4 months of use?!?!?!?

I started to search online to find answers and finally came across your post about the assistive touch. We did get that to work so she is at least able to navigate again. THANK YOU!

No.

All Apple products come with a 1 year warranty.

You get 90 days phone support. After that it is like $29 for phone support.

Take it to an Apple Store genius bar and have them look at it.

we're first time ipod users too. assistive touch puts an icon on your screen that allows you to do a few different things. For my daughter, it is now the only way she can get back to her home screen. It's pretty easy to find and set up....you go to settings, general, accessibility, then assitive touch. I had to google fixes for a stuck home button and this is the only thing that I have found that works...at least till I can get it to an Apple "genius" (ha!)

Your response make no sense.... 1 year= 365days, not 90days!!! This is the point of that comment. I too have had this "conumdrum", and actually my iPhone was brand new (less than thirty days). Knowing this an iPod thread that issue still applies as we are here for 'Apple' devices.

(just doesn't make sense designing hardware at such rediculous prices to fail straight away, my experiance of ALL Apple devices GIVEN to me as I never buy such obvious FAILURES!!!! I hate seeing others being so sucked into these FADS! - this outburst after seeing 11 pages of one thread for only one device of design fault across probably all iPods, sorry 8hrs trying to 'fix')

Hi All,

So its 7 hours since my last post to this thread in hopes to find a solution and the best I found was on YouTube by CNET. They do suggest this rubbing a alcohol liquid as a solution among other options before sending away before repair. Please see vid; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yBfhCmq9VkA (I am in no way endorsing CNET by doing this, it was the best video explanation for a fix).

I am posting this because these options are for out of waranty devices and are demonstrated in software and hardware issues before sending away. There are other options available, just search around this comunity or this video. But trust me when I say these are the best options because I have just spent the last 11 hours trying to fix this 'sticky/unresponsive home button issue'.

While searching outside this community I sat here doing this threads suggestion of alcohol for about 3hours and have started to get a response. So my second hand iPod was owned by someone very dirty and I have the pics of people living in a not so clean surroundings to proove it... hint remove your data when selling your tech. In the mean time I am using the suggested software home button while working-out the gunk under the button and hopefully start saving the bucket load of money I may need to get it fixed or buy a better one (not new though!).

Lastly, If your device is under warranty, USE IT. Don't be a fool and try anything, I did watch some vid's about the hardware cleaning to fix this problem and it is completely worth it. USE YOUR WARRANTY. Check your documents and call Apple for the double check for warranty services.

I know this is alot to read but it's the most comprehensive answer you'll probably get and I hope it helps. Thank you. 🙂

(It's 2:40am, I am so tired, 😐 lol. Good Luck)

Hi Skylerfromwi, I had a similar problem with updating my iPhone 3GS a little while ago, not the home button just the lockout. It stressed the heck out of me as I don't have an actual Apple Store here where I live to take it to, and the instructions I found saying I needed a computer on wifi and a SIM card yet my only SIM card was my only wifi. But luckily my service provider could help, and I don't know what they did but it only took about 30 seconds to fix with some kind of code. So in saying that, and i know its an iPod and not an iPhone, if you can't take it to a store then try your service provider store. Also, keep trying in this community and around the web, YouTube is a good resource. Good Luck, lets us know how you go :)

[update for my home button issue; it still doesn't work and will only cost 1/8th of the devices retail price to fix, that's a bargain considering the $800 device is no longer sold in Australia. I am using that access setting home button which is a savour for this know hardware defect]

My life is full of music! I couldn't stand the few hours I had to go without it! I planned to get a new one, but first I did my research. I came across this and decided to try it. The first time I did it, it did not work. I didin't give up quite yet. I tried again with just a little more rubbing alcohol and it worked! Thank you so much for this post!

Thanks Again,

The Happy Music Girl

I have to agree with using compressed air.

Both on the Home button (when compressed) and the charger port.

It was the solution for me!

I also used an Alcohol Swap Patch. They come in foil packs.

They have just the right amount of moisture/alcohol.

The edges of the patch came out black when I ran it inside the port chamber.

Also great just to have around to clean the screen, w/ immediate evaporation.

When my ipod touch 4th generation screen cracked horribly i took it to apple (my neighbors got a free iphone 4s replacement) i got mine replaced for 100$ and the next day i realized the home button was broken and the battery was barley alive. Which is why i came here. The battery doesn't matter so much because its a little better anyway.
