problems with netgear WGR614

Hi,
We recently bought a NetGear router. The problem is that my Mac Mini keeps dropping the connection.

The set-up here is:

1 Windows Vista laptop
1 Mac Mini (10.4.11)
1 iPhone

I thought that it was the router, but both the Vista laptop and the iPhone have no problem getting on to, and staying on, the LAN.

The Mac drops the connection periodically. It's not a case of screen saver or energy saver mode, 'cos it happens even as I'm sitting using it. I'm sitting checking mail or chatting on Adium and bang, the machine's off the network. I go and do something else, and when I come back, sometimes it's back, sometimes not.

The AirPort item on the menu bar goes to zero bars, and sometimes when I click it, the Mac can't even /see/ the network, let alone connect to it. So I click on the desktop, and then again on the AirPort menu, and sometimes it displays the name of the WiFi LAN. Sometimes not.

What''s frustrating is that I don't know /why/ it happens, as all the Mac tells me is that 'there was a problem' connecting to the LAN. I have two options: 'OK', or 'Try Again'. A sample of the logs is below.

For info, the Mac and the router are about 10 ft apart, separated by one wall. The two other machines still manage to find and keep their connections, even when twice as far away, and with two walls between them.

Anyone any ideas as to why this happens?

Thanks.

Hi DC,

Hi, See if this helps...

Go to System Preferences

Click Network

Highlight AirPort and click Configure...

Choose “By default, join: Preferred networks”

Select your access point.

Remove your access point with the minussign, Launch your keychain access in Utilities and delete your access point keychain entry.

Open Keychain Access in Utilities, use Keychain First Aid under the Window Menu item, then either check the Password under that item, change it, or delete it and start over.

Resetting your keychain in Mac OS X...

If Keychain First Aid finds an issue that it cannot repair, or if you do not know your keychain password, you may need to reset your keychain.

I apologised to mine, when I had to unplug her and put her into the box. 'asked her if she thought I was making the right decision.

Interference. Hmm.. maybe. But I can't see with what, or by what.

Over my right shoulder is a wall, about two metres behind me. On the other side of that wall is the router. If I look at the AirPort item on my Mini, it's currently at two bars. If I unlock my iPhone, I have five bars.

I've switched to channel 10. So far so good, no disconnections since earlier this morning...

Bizarrely enough, I was sitting having a beer with my flatmate, when he tutted. +What's up?+ I ask. Interference, is his response.

Apparently, when he switches the lights on in his living room, it interferes with his digital TV wotsit.

He hadn't told me this. I don't know if it's in some way related, as at this moment, the lights are on and the Mac is showing a whopping five bars in its AirPort signal strength indicator.
