Move selection Up/Down

I'm looking for a keyboard shortcut that moves your selection up/down in the document. The best way to understand what I'm wanting is to open up Office:Word, select some text in a document, and use ctrlShiftUp arrow (or down arrow). I use this all the time when writing essays, working in tables, taking notes, etc. Please let me know if there is any duplicate functionality in Pages. (I failed to find it in keyboard short cuts or in blind guessing)

Thats the point, outlines evolve and change and keyboard shortcuts make that very quick and easy. After you're used to the keyboard short-cuts the drag/drop is pretty clunky and slow. In Word the shortcuts will apply to tables as well. So if you want to move a row up/down you can easily do it without having to cut, move, and then paste. Its just ease of use. Something you may not miss unless you were already used to it.

Again, the best way to truly understand is to open Microsoft Word in the Note view. Type out an outline then move sections up/down with ctrl shiftarrow

Not having to move my hands from my keyboard ever makes it much faster. And using it during outline mode is only one application. Its much faster in tables for example, where to move whole rows would otherwise require cutting one row, dragging the other row, then pasting the cut row. Where a single keystroke would move it without ever having to lift your hand from the keyboard. Or, when I'm editing my essays/reports I can move full paragraphs around my whole essay without ever having to touch my mouse. Anyone who uses primarily keyboard short cuts in their work would testify to how much faster and productive they are.

If anyone finds similar functionality let me know. (Or have clarifying questions) If not then, while I appreciate you taking time to respond, it obviously won't be helpful.

It's certainly not the best way to explain what you want.
We are not forced to know the way Microsoft products behave. They are not allowed to enter my home so I don't know the way they do.

So, given your message I don't know if you want to move the cursor or if you want to move the selection's contents.

Ok, say you were taking notes in outline format.

Heading 1
- Sub point
- Sub point
- Sub point
Heading 2
- Sub Point
- Sub Point
- Sub Point
Heading 3
- Sub Point
- Sub Point
- Sub Point

And you realize that Heading 3 (And all its sub points) would make more sense below Heading 1 and before Heading 2.

In Microsoft word, I would use keyboard shortcuts to select Heading 3 and all its subpoints, and then use shift ctrlUp Arrow and it would move my selection (Heading 3 and its subpoints) above Heading 2 and all its sub points.

Heading 1
- Sub point
- Sub point
- Sub point
Heading 3
- Sub Point
- Sub Point
- Sub Point
Heading 2
- Sub Point
- Sub Point
- Sub Point

If I did that again, it'd be above Heading 1.

This is the functionality I want to duplicate.

Similarly, shift ctrl left/right arrow would promote or demote in a list. I understand tab and shift+tab will promote/demote in outline, but I have found no duplicate functionality for moving selections.

Let me know if you'd like further clarification.

Maybe it's just me, but I'm having trouble imagining anything intuitive about moving a selected block of text by keyboard controls, especially if that text is part of a developing outline where both position and hierarchy are likely to change as the outline develops.

In Pages, your choices are cut-and-paste, or drag-and-drop. To accomplish what you've described, a text selection isn't required at all. Just grab the bullet and drag it to its intended new location. The topic children will accompany the parent on the move.
