iTunes 8.0 installation error --- network resource is unavailable / .msi

Hello.

When I was trying to install the latest version of iTunes I found an error message saying the following:

"The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable.
Click OK to try again, or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package 'iTunes.msi' in the box below."

Yet, when I search my entire computer I cannot find any file named iTunes.msi.

To further the problems, I cannot uninstall iTunes because it is prompting me with the exact same message I typed out above.

I am also unable to open the iTunes program because of this same problem. I cannot access iTunes, yet I see it in my program files directory.

Oh, and after that message above appears, I click cancel and this message shows up:
"The installation source for this product is not available. Verify that the source exists and that you can access it."

What does this all mean?

Please help!

Hi polydorus, I followed your instructions carefully, twice, and it does not work properly for me. After installation I can use iTunes but I shall not reboot. After that the described error pops up again.
I install iTunes 8.1.1 and had it installed before until an XP patch came and I installed it (I know, always a risk).
So I keep on reinstalling iTunes each and every day

After a lot of help to get the iTunes update installed (from the iTunes support desk, Apple support in Ireland and Polydorus' posts above) the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility msicuu2.exe did nothing for me either. I re-read the Microsoft blurb and noticed that it referred only to a Windows Installer Cleanup Utility msicuu.exe, not to the msicuu2.exe utility offered on its website. A Google search revealed that msicuu.exe could be found on the Windows XP distribution CD under Windows Support Tools. So it proved: msicuu.exe displays a proper menu from which to select software for removal, unlike msicuu2.exe which operates only on MS Office but claims in the MS blurb to have a general menu.

Msicuu.exe removed all the Apple software programs within a couple of seconds, and installation of iTunes 8.2.0.23 followed immediately. It is playing cheerful music now. Many thanks to all.

This is what I Did:

When I saw the window saying the path to resource was not found, I click on the BROWSE button and pointed to the following location: (On Windows Vista)

C:\PROGRAMDATA\APPLE\INSTALLER CACHE\APPLE MOBILE DEVICE SUPPORT 2.X.X.X\

The X.X.X would be the highest number you find as if you have been updating before you will see several version numbers. I did right-click on the applemobiledevicesupport.msi file contained in that folder and checked the date it was created and indeed was 'today's' date. So I click on OK, and apparently it didn't take it on the first try, so I did it a second time and same resault. So I was a bit dissapointed and at the end I click on CANCEL on the main popup-window. and for my surprise the Installation continued without any hassle and at the End Quicktime, Itunes and Safari where updated.

So anyone please give it a try and see if you get the same luck as I did.
