I didn't do anything different. I just plugged it in and it worked. I have an old iMac G4 800 MHz PPC.

Other than the iPhone 3G, I also got a iPod Nano which I got last year with USB 2.0 and works fine. The iPhone never crashed although now it's used with a new Apple laptop. The Nano I sync everyday and the only weird behavior I have observed is sometimes (1 in 20 times I sync) it gets hung up. I noticed it once when I plugged in the Nano while starting up iTunes and since then, I let iTunes start up first then plug in Nano. Can that behavior be attributed to my Mac USB 1.1? I don't know.

Here is what my profiler says I have for USB:

It is definitive that you cannot upgrade or convert USB 1.1 port to USB 2.0 ... yet the motivation in many cases is to use the machine with an iPhone. I thought I was going to have to use my son's MacBook to synch, but found that I can connect just fine through the powered USB on the back. I admit that it is SLOW, but after the initial load the updates are not bad. There have been occasions when my system doesn't recognize the iPhone is connected, but I suspect that additional connections may have been the cause (card reader, ext. hard drive, tablet, ext. DVD drive).
