DVD Region coding

Is there a fix available to set the DVD player in G5 mk 2 to Region Free. I hava DVD's from various regions but cannot play for fear of setting the region to a fixed code. Resulting in limited play back. Any help appreciated

Thanks

As a recent 'switcher' (from WinXP) I know of applications (for non-Mac platforms) which allow you to play DVDs from different regions - even when the player is already locked to a specific region (example: http://www.region-free-dvd.com/index.html).

So, instead of having to buy more players, a software-based solution should be possible. The question is of course, which application does the trick for a Mac?? And that's the question I've been meaning to find an answer to, as well.

Hello Anne, You wrote:

Yes, you've understood correctly 🙂 It's really easy. Our iMac is set to region 2 and our Lacie to region 1 🙂

My problem is that I've already set for the last time (5th time) my DVD player on my Powerbook G4 to region 1 - will I still be able to view region 2 DVDs on an external drive when connnecting it for the first time?

If you've the Pioneer drive in your iMac you should download the free VLC Player. It will open and play DVD's of all region codes. However, I understand that it does not work if you've an iMac supplied with the Matshita drive instead.

After downloading and installing VLC Player, go to System Preferences and select 'CD's & DVD's' under the 'Hardware' section. Then go to the last option 'When you insert a video DVD' and select 'Open other appplication.' Now choose VLC Player from your 'Applications' folder. This simply means that Apple's DVD Player will not open automatically now on inserting a DVD. VLC will, and it gets past region codes.

Hope this helps. All the best and happy viewing!

Steve.

I just received a DVD from Finland, and when I tried to play it, a window popped up telling me about the max of five changes, after reading what has been posted in this forum (which was very informative) I wonder seeing that I have two hard drives in my computer, if I could have one set for Region1 the other to region 2. by installing my DVD player in both drives, am I dreaming?

You can always use Mac the Ripper or OSEx to make a region-free copy on the hard drive or image that region-free copy to a DVD and play that instead.

Mind you, programs like MtR may not be legal where you live, so obviously check it out first.

I have a PC that I have used one of those region blanking programs on and it works fine. What they do is actually set the DVD playback program region to region-free.
