Importing Windows Explorer Favorites to Safari

I recently switched from Windows to Mac. On Windows Explorer, I had a larger number of favorites (bookmarks) that I would like to import if at all possible to use in Safari. I also have Mac Explorer and Foxfire running. Anyone have any advice? I've gotten the favorite folder across to the Mac but have not found a way to import the favorites.

Hi Neil,

On your Windows machine, export your favourites using Internet Explorer's 'File' menu. Ensure that the exported file has the extension '.html' (not '.htm'). Rename if necessary. Copy that file over to your Mac, and import the favourites using Safari's 'File' menu. To view your imported bookmarks, select 'Show All Bookmarks' from the 'Bookmarks' menu. They should be listed in their own collection as imported favourites.

Yang, you stated that it was a similar procedure to Export in Safari and Import in IE.

I have been trying for days to find a way to export my Safari bookmarks, without success. I can't find a thing in the help files, either.

Please share exact steps.

I want to export certain files and be able to use them on my Windows computer. I also want to make thorough backups of files in different ways, before I install Tiger. I want complete CYA before I try it. I've had Tiger since May, but cowardice is keeping me from installation. Yes, I have backups, but I have learned never to put my confidence in only ONE type of backup file, no matter the OS (and I am a die hard Mac user!)

Thanks,
Elaine

Hello,

In regards to importing into Windows versions of Internet Explorer, I had that problem once.

I ended up using a shareware program called "Bookmark Magic". You should be able to find it for download at:

http://www.cybermatrix.com/bkmkmag.html

Going by memory, I installed FireFox or Netscape on the Mac, and imported my bookmarks into it (FireFox or Netscape). Either should work since they are essentially the same.

Then, I exported the bookmarks from Netscape (or FireFox) into a file (using the built-in export routines).

Then, I e-mailed them to my PC.

Then, I downloaded the PC version of the same browser (Netscape or FireFox). Next, I imported the bookmarks back into the browser, and exported them again using the Windows version (this step may not be needed but is mentioned for the sake of being thorough).

Then, using Bookmark Magic on the PC, I then converted the bookmarks for use with Internet Explorer, and imported them into Internet Explorer.

Sounds like a lot of work, but it was pretty simple.

Bookmark Magic is shareware, but it can be used for free for a short period (I can't remember how many days). If you want to use it beyond the trial period, it costs $20.

But, since you should only have to do this once (unless it's a regular need), then you should be able to do everything you need before the free trial ends.

I just used the trial version to complete the task, and then uninstalled it.

Quick, simple, and free for a one time use 🙂
