Can't transfer music to ipod

My original iPod from about 2003 is still working. I originally loaded it using Musicmatch. Now I have some music from CD's copied into iTunes that I want to transfer. Itunes seems to recognize that my iPod is there, but I can't transfer new music to it. I've set iTunes to transfer manually so I don't lose the music on my iPod. I've read post from "Frank 147" dated April 12, 2009. His is a similar problem. What can I do?

My iPod Music Library in iTunes has never contained all the albums that are in my iTunes music file. But now I've been able to move them by clicking and dragging the individual music files from the iTunes file to the iPod Music Library in iTunes. Then even some album art is transferring. I now have
1.11 gb of music on the iPod out of about 2.5.
You asked the question "for the music that did not transfer, try playing that song in iTunes. Does it play in iTunes?" After that I tried to play one of those songs and found that the particular track transferred and started playing, but also a spot opened up in the iPod Music Library to drag the remaining tracks to. So I'm continuing that process.
Thank you for your help.

If you are able to click and drag individual files from the iTunes Music library (under the heading LIBRARY in the iTunes sidebar) to the iPod's Music list (under the heading DEVICES in the iTunes sidebar), then you do not have the iPod set to sync. That's why everything in your iTunes Music library is not in your iPod.

You have it set to +Manually manage music+ on the iPod's Summary tab. And that is fine, if you want to manually drag files to the iPod and manually delete files from the iPod. But if you uncheck that box for +Manually manage music+, and click on the Apply button, you have the iPod set to sync. Then, whatever change you make to your main iTunes Music library will be synced to the iPod (whenever you connect the iPod or click the Sync button).
