Can't disconnect Garmin GPS

I'm supposed to be able to disconnect my Garmin Nuvi using the eject in the Finder file section. Every time I do this and then disconnect the usb cable I lose the downloaded maps in the gps unit. Anyone have any experience with this?

My Nuvi takes a good 10-15 seconds to dismount. I thought it was a fluke so I mounted and dismounted it several times and each time was the same delay.

Some USB devices to take some time to cleanup, synch and whatever it is that they do before they allow a disconnect. One of my flashdrives is almost instantaneous, the other takes about 5 seconds or so before allowing it to be unplugged. Whatever the time, it's important to wait or data loss might result.

The Garmin shows as a mounted disk on the desktop if you have the Finder preferences set to show external disks.

To dismount the gps, I drag the icon down to the trash bin. It dismounts after a delay and disappears.

The other way would be to use Finder to dismount it by opening finder and clicking on the eject symbol next to the Garmin disk.

My Memorex FlashDrive, has a light on it. When I drag the icons (yes there are 2) to the trash, they disappear very quickly, but it takes several more seconds before the light on the drive goes into the "sleep" mode indicating it's OK to remove it. I am not sure the desktop icons are sufficient indicators. When you eject a DVD, for example, the icon disappears immediately but it takes the DVD drive a few more seconds to start the ejection cycle.
Both my FlashDrives have light indicators. If your Garmin has no indicator, I would wait for a short time after the icons disappear, just to be sure no data are corrupted.

I think I may have misunderstood your question now that I look at it again. I think you may be asking if there is any indication on the Garmin that it is finished processing and can be dismounted.

If that is the case, then unfortunately I can't say that I noticed anything other than the Garmin software saying it is finished processing. I think the unit takes varying times to execute the dismount because it's doing cleanup routines.

If you are asking when it is safe to unplug the Garmin from the usb port then the answer to that is the Garmin will turn itself off when the dismount is completed.
