R. Miller yes i am shooting in HDV. at least i hope i am i was able to get it to go thru. i will recheck the settings for easy setup in FCP. what i did for FCP was go to easy setup. then i put it on camcorder. then HDV and 23.98 and i forget the other setting but will recheck it. now the main thing is how do i capture it into FCP. or how do i know if its going into FCP. and how do i find it once its in FCP. So... with the cable disconnected from the Mac and the camera, go into the PLAY menu settings and choose the correct playback setting, i.e. DV or HDV and lock it.

Then turn the camera OFF. Connect the cable to the camera, then to the Mac, and turn on the camera.

Launch FCP and choose Easy Setup> HDV 1080/60i Firewire Basic (if you are shooting HDV).

That should do it.

Hi, my computer is less than a year old, I have two external hard drives using the Firewire 800 ports when I plug my Canon GL2 or my Canon XL2 into the firewire 400 port (either on the tower or on my screen) I lose my external hard drives (device unplugged etc error). The minute I turn the camera off they come back. If I ignore that and go ahead and open FCP with the camera on, FCP doesn't see the camera. My settings for capturing I believe are correct (I have been using FCP for 4 years).
I have trashed prefs, disk utility first aid, reinstalled FCP with no luck. Oh and dv on in my camera settings has been done. The problem I am experiencing has been happening for a while but with switching ports and rebooting I was always able to get it going albeit rather randomly. But now after a full day of trying different things, reading forums etc it's not working and I am stumped
If anyone has any ideas I would be awfully grateful?

Goodfellow...I really doubt its Final Cut Pro...this is a MASTER program, what hollywood uses to edit their films, cheesy or not films, but it will work.
Also just about every indi filmmaker has an HV30/40/20...and have edited their films on FCP, ect.

So you will get it, just listen to the replies, they know better about these things...but am sure its not FCP itself, something is not connected or set correct, give someone here a step by step of what you got connected and set up.

OH, YOU GOT IT COOL. Peace.
