2TB HD in Intel Xserve?

2TB HD in Intel Xserve?

Hi,

Has anyone tried to install a new 2TB Hard drive into an Intel Xserve (1st Gen) Namely the Green WD models x 3 ?

6TB in 1U would be great!!! (just prefer not to be the guinea pig:)

I wouldn't use it.

It isn't rated as an enterprise drive, rather a desktop drive. As such it isn't rated for 24/7 operation. It is designed to be able to spin down periodically when idle (which is how it achieves much of its green/power rating). With a 14.5 second spin up time I can see this being an absolute nightmare for a server application.

Feel free to try but I think your caution about not being the guinea pig exists for a very good reason. 🙂

Check out the Seagate Constellation ES drives. They are enterprise drives and are available up to 2TB.
