localhost in mail.app

I can use the command line mail command to read and send mail to myusername@localhost

What settings do I use to do the same in the mail app: mail.app?
pop/imap
incoming mail server: localhost, mail.localhost, smtp.localhost?
username: myusername
password: probably my password 🙂

If you have enabled postfix on your computer so it is now a mail server, like it appears that you have done, I think that you need to install a third-party gizmo to make an imap/pop server exist on your machine. I don't think that postfix in and of itself has that capability.

You can get an inexpensive imap/pop server bundled with a mail server administration GUI called "MailServe" from cutedgesystems.com for twenty-five bucks. It's a pretty straightforward and uncluttered GUI interface to OSX's built-in postfix and it includes both uw-imap/pop and dovecot imap/pop mail servers. The help files are geared to people that aren't mail administrators, and they are actually pretty useful.

cutedgesystems only accepts payment via PayPal, though, so as long as you're okay with PayPal as your only payment mechanism, then I guess all is well. You have to pay for the software up front before trying it. Fortunately, it simplifies setting up a home mailserver significantly so I don't think that you'd be disappointed with the product.
