I have only this computer, an imac 17 inch 1.83ghz intel core duo running Mac OS X (10.5.6). A new macbook being is being shipped from Apple. Also, an Airport Express is being shipped. Both arrive next week. I thought I would do a little advance work this morning and set up a network. I failed.
You can't really set up a network with just one computer, so not being able to is understandable.
A network is a connection between two or more computers, or between a computer (or more computers) and a router. That AirPort Express will act as a router. With that connection, you can do things like file sharing (connect to the the other computer's hard drive), screen sharing (remote control one Mac from the other), printer sharing, and other interesting things.
Technically, if you were connected to the Internet over a broadband connection (such as DSL or cable), your were already connected to a network, just not a local network that you created.
What you will do is connect the AirPort Express to your internet connection (usually a DSL or cable modem) using an Ethernet cable. The default setup of the AirPort Express should be for this function, so it should be fairly easy. The AirPort Express then shares the one Internet connection with your iMac and MacBook, which is what a
router does. It will also establishes a wireless network, so that you can connect between the two Macs.
When you get all of the cool new hardware, you can come back here with any questions.
It makes more sense to me, now. I need to set up a wireless network and then use the migration assistant to migrate the apps, files and settings to the Macbook. That's the plan. I'll get back.
