Screen frozen with image of iTunes icon and USB plug...

I just tried to update my ipod software, and error came up, and now my iPod is stuck on this screen - there is the iTunes logo, and a pic of the USB cable and an arrow pointing to iTunes. this won't go away when I turn it off/on, plug it in to my computer.. iTunes is no longer reading it. This happened last time I tried to update and I wound up having to restore my iPod.

what do I do?
