G5 Quad Fan/ Temp averages at idle???? PLZ HELP

Hello,
Sorry if this has already been posted but I cant find this info to save my soul.

What should my G5 Quad (late 2005) CPU fans RPM be at idle (no programs running)?

What should my G5 Quad (late 2005) temps be at idle (no programs running)?

My current stats:

Fans:
Drive - 1000 rpm
Backside - 1237 rpm
CPU A Intake - 970 rpm
CPU B Intake - 970 rpm
CPU A Exhaust - 1000 rpm
CPU B Exhaust - 1000 rpm
CPU A Pump - 1250 rpm
CPU B Pump - 1250 rpm

Temp:
HD - 103 F
CPU A Core 1 - 110 F
CPU A Core 2 - 110 F
CPU B Core 1 - 104 F
CPU B Core 2 - 106 F
Backside - 121 F
Drive bay - 92 F
GPU - 178 F

Nothing has changed recently, it has always been louder then any G5 Dual I worked on, which I thought was normal. However I was reading that many people experience fan trouble with these machines. I read that they are suppose to be very quiet. Mine doesnt sound very loud but it is noticeable. I would hate to think that I have had a problem the entire time and never did anything about it before my apple care ran out (which it already has 😟 ).

Any insight would be MUCH appreciated.

By the way, I have already done the following:

- Thoroughly cleaned inside
- Repair disk permissions
- Verify disk (passed)
- Preformed all updates
- Preformed an extended apple hardware test (passed)
- Reset PRAM
- Reset PMU
- I even formatted and installed a completely new HD with a fresh OS X 10.4 install.

No improvement...

The GPU temperature looks a little high - what card do you have in there? I have the 7800GT in mine and as I recall, it's around 120-140 F at idle.

The rest of the temps look normal to me. They're about the same as mine.

The only fan temp that looks out of place is the Backside fan. I don't recall mine running that fast, but I'd have to check. It's behind the hard drives, but your drive bay temperature looks fine. Maybe it's working harder because it's the only one close enough to affect the PCIe slots?

When was the last time you blew out the dust on the machine? The GPU in particular can build up a lot of dust. I actually removed mine a few months ago to give it a good cleaning with a can of compressed air.

I also have the 7800GT.

So the fan rpms look ok? The reason I ask is at work I use G5 Dual and its CPU fans idle between 300-500 rpm! :O. It's SOOOO quiet!!

The Quad has been cleaned recently, but I did not remove the 7800GT card to clean it. Thats a good idea.

Well I pulled out my 7800GT and blew it out. WOW! It might as well been wrapped in a down comforter! The Quad has been idle for about 20 min GPU is reading 126 F. 🙂

However the backside fan is at 1407 rpm. If you could take a look at what your backside rpm is, I would appreciate it.

Also, if anyone else has idle temp and fan rpm info for a Power Mac G5 Quad (late 2005) I would love to see it. To figure out that info you can download iStat Pro, its free just google it.

Finally, what is everyones perceptions on the volume of their machine? I've read several reviews stating that it is near silent. My G5 Dual is as silent as it gets, BUT my G5 Quad is FAR from silent.

Hi! My backside fan is only about 200 rpm less than yours. 200 rpm on these fans isn't much difference. My other stats are nearly identical to yours. My gpu temp runs about 136-144. If you want the fans to run slower and the temps to be less cool the room down to 60 degrees. I try to keep mine at 70 or less at all times. heck I run the air conditioner all winter long around here! Tom

I guess I'm just paranoid (hopefully). I just wish it was as quiet as my work machine (g5 dual). Seriously, that thing is absurdly quiet. Oh well.

I have the exact same computer as you , I got it back in November 2006.

When I first turned it on the day I got it , there was a loud pop sound and the machine wouldn't boot and then I turned it back on and it started fine and ran perfectly well since that first day (i did not have AppleCare and it was just past the warrenty so I did not bother calling Apple about the issue). I never found out what happened that day....

A couple weeks ago I bought 2 PCIe cards to put in the computer . More specifically , they are UAD-1 brand cards which are designed to run software plugins for Audio Sequencing & recording programs.

Once I installed the cards and then restarted the computer my fans started running loud , they kicked in as soon as I opened even one program (Firefox for example). I tried removing the cards I had just installed and restarted. Once it started back up, same thing... loud fans , even without the additional PCI cards installed! I downloaded an App to see my IDLE fan and temperature readings and they do NOT look good:

Fans:
Drive - 1000 rpm
Backside - 1100 rpm
CPU A Intake - 2858 rpm
CPU B Intake - 2856 rpm
CPU A Exhaust - 2945 rpm
CPU B Exhaust - 2936 rpm
CPU A Pump - 3301 rpm
CPU B Pump - 3301 rpm

Temp:
HD - 95 F
CPU A Core 1 - 99 F
CPU A Core 2 - 99 F
CPU B Core 1 - 126 F
CPU B Core 2 - 122 F
Backside - 101 F
Drive bay - 90 F

.

The fans are super loud.. it is very annoying because I work in a music studio and I have a small room!

Does anyone know what this may mean? Or have any additional suggestions? I ran the Apple Diagnostic CD but when I tried to do the Thermal Calibration it said "Maximum CPU tempurature reached" for one of the CPUs, and would not continue.

I've got the same fan noise problems of Catalist8 (and explained in depth on another thread in this same forum). But the following are the stats of my Quad G5:

Fans:
Drive - 1000 rpm
Backside - 1560 rpm
CPU A Intake - 3097 rpm
CPU B Intake - 3097 rpm
CPU A Exhaust - 3193 rpm
CPU B Exhaust - 3186 rpm
CPU A Pump - 3584 rpm
CPU B Pump - 3584 rpm

Temp:
CPU A Core 1 - 112 F
CPU A Core 2 - 106 F
CPU B Core 1 - 124 F
CPU B Core 2 - 124 F
Backside - 99 F
Drive bay - 94 F
GPU - 137 F

As you can see, my CPUs Pump fans are spinning almost 3x faster than yours. And I can assure you the noise is almost unbearable, if you must stay near the Quad for 8-10 hrs/day...

(Basically an idle CPU, at lukewarm temperatures, but loud fans blowing a strong cool breeze out the back of my machine. And yes, I've blown the dust out with compressed air - there wasn't much in there to begin with. And I've reset the SMU by unplugging the machine for a few minutes. No difference. What next?)

Don't rely on just Apple DU to find and repair errors, invest in Disk Warrior.
