Monitor Output, for 24p

Hey all,

So my set up is like this.... Firewire cable to Camera (Deck) to S-Video to Sony monitor.

Now what I've noticed, that if I edit something thats 29.97 frames it will play back on my monitor, but anything that is 24p or 23p... won't play as a movie, only as stills... Is there anyway to change it so you could have a 24p project play as a smooth movie not in single frames?

Thanks!

I doubt your digital-analog box can do this.

If you're seeing the spinning beach ball of death when you nest your 24p sequence in a 29.97 sequence, it may not work. Try with a very short sequence. Could be that it's choking the system. Try dropping a single clip in a 29.97 timeline and see if that works. Could be you need more RAM or a faster computer.

FCP automatically telecines a 23.976 fps sequence up to 29.97 fps for external viewing via firewire. You may want to peruse your user guide. There are many of us who've been viewing 23.976 fps sequences for years this way.

Also, most NTSC devices will not support a frame rate other than 29.97 fps, are you sure you have a multi-format monitor capable of native 23.976?

I mean this is my process... after using cinematools to take a captured 29.97p video converts to a 24p (since its shot on 24p regular) I drop it into timeline... which automatically converts it to the sequence necessary... In this case its 720x480 16:9 and 24 frames...
If I made a timeline with 29 or copy and paste from 24 to a 29 timeline it won't be in sync... but it will work for viewing on my external monitor... So is there a way to output on 29 but edit with 24?

For clarity, please don't round the numbers off. There is no 29 fps or 23 fps. The whole reason 23.98 exists is for compatibility with NTSC televisions. 24.0 will never work. There is never any reason to edit 24p video at 24.0 fps. 24.0 is only for certain workflows where the material originated on film. I can assure you that 23.98 video will work just fine through a firewire camera and 24.0 will not. Ever.
