How Do I find Keyboard Characters?

Can't find certain characters on my Apply Wired (for IMac) keyboard -- the squiggly line that gets used in front of Option or Command keys for shortcuts, the little hat that is used the same way. Don't see any of it on Keyboard viewer or in Keyboard preferences.
