ARD AUTHENTICATION FAILED

Hello please can someone help.

I have setup apple remote access 100's of time before without any problems, however setting up my customers new server running 10.5.6 server when trying to connect using screen sharing or ARD i got the error authentication failed? I have checked the credentials and all is fine, if i disable remote management from the sharing preferences and just enable screen sharing I can connect ok.
If i do the same on with there 10.4.11 server all works fine.
I decided to setup 10.5 server on my mac pro at home and came across the very same problem, I have performed all system updates and searched the web for help but found nothing of any use.

any help or a push in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

kindest regards

Darren

I had a similar problem and found that kickstarting ARD helped. This will kickstart enabling all privileges for all users:

sudo /System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/Resources/k ickstart -activate -configure -access -on -restart -agent -privs -all

I'm having the same problem with one of my remote servers - it's still on 10.5.6 (don't dare to upgrade to .7 yet - having all sorts of issues on my test server) and has been working fine until recently however I now can't access it. I've tried ARD, Screen sharing and ssh and can't get in with anything. I don't know if my problem is the same as yours exactly (can either of you access your remote machine via ssh?) - it really looks as if the credentials have changed, but I can't imagine how - I'm one of only two people who can do it, and the other one is the company director whom I work quite closely with, and he hasn't done it either.

I also tried kickstarting ARD with no luck.

I can still access the server with Server Admin and via ssh as root, but no luck with remote desktop.

I thought it was down to Snow Leopard update on my workstation and Server Admin 10.6, as my MacBook which runs 10.5.7 can still connect fine - Mac mini server is on 10.5.8 (Build 9L30).

Given 10.6 Server admin can not work with certs on the server this is a problem.

By the way on my MacBook I didn't apply the Remote Admin Update 3.3/Remote Desktop Client Update 3.3.1 both dated 8/20/09.

Be sure to differentiate the kickstart commands.

Prior to ARD 3.2:
sudo /System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/Resources/k ickstart -activate -configure -access -on -restart -agent -privs -all

ARD 3.2 and after (snow leopard)
sudo /System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/Resources/k ickstart -configure -allowAccessFor -allUsers -privs -all

I was experiencing the same issue described by a lot of people on the net and on this topic more specifically (Authentication failed on a Mac OS X Server 10.5.8 machine). Luckily enough, thanks to the second method suggested by Scott I finally have it working! 🙂
