iTunes DJ vs. iTunes Remote

I've experienced some similar problems that others have referenced in recent posts, so I'll avoid repeating those, although my issues remain unresolved. Aside from networking issues, the thing I'm most frustrated about is the Remote app interface. This is a little hard to explain, please bear with me!
When I first discovered and downloaded the Remote app on my iPhone 3G, it connected fine and worked pretty well - in DJ MODE. I later found out that I wasn't experiencing the full functionality of the application. At the top of the app window on my phone are the words "iTunes DJ". I was only able to request songs - that's it. No volume or speaker control, no playback controls, no access to anything besides my entire Music library (that is, no podcasts, playlists, etc.). So, when I got wind from an Apple creative that 'Remote' is much more robust that I was experiencing, I removed it from the phone and reinstalled it. I might have done some other things at the time - I can't remember. But bottom line, it worked. I had complete control of my iTunes app from everywhere in my house and yard - NO issues whatsoever.

The Remote application stopped working a few days ago - it couldn't find the library. Seemed like a wireless issue, except that wireless was working fine with all other equipment and iPhone wireless was working fine in public. Since Monday, 'reset' network settings, I have released and renewed IP addresses, I have power cycled my router and modem, I have checked 'forget all remotes' in iTunes, I have removed the app and reinstalled, I have deleted the app from iTunes and re-downloaded the app and reinstalled to the phone, AND I have done a complete restore on the phone...reinstalling remote once again when all that was said and done. And in a nutshell, I'm back to my 'iTunes DJ' version of Remote....which is now impossible to live with since I know that Remote can do so much more. I've scoured the internet for posts on this topic and I've never seen anyone refer to this 'broken' version of the app. I've talked to apple care, the genius bar, and Apple creatives. What gives? Please - somebody - tell me you've seen this! At this point, I'll be satisfied with acknowledgement of the issue...but I'm also hoping for a solution!

Sounds like a crazy issue. But for me when iTunes isn't seeing my remote from the iPhone just restarting iTunes always fixes it for me.

Are you sure you didn't disable remotes by accident or some setting? It seems to work best (for me at least) if I have the app up and running before I open iTunes, no idea why.

Also I'm assuming your iPhone has no problems connecting your your WiFi network, correct?

Funny, I find that remote (used to) work best when iTunes is open first. But anyway....that's neither here nor there right now because remote doesn't work at ALL.

My iPhone did not have any problems connecting to my WiFi network until last Tuesday. That is in fact the same day that remote stopped working....or at least that's the day I noticed, because I had been away for the 4 days prior. I brought it in to the genius bar on Tuesday and they couldn't find anything wrong with the wireless function on the phone. I was able to connect to the wireless network in the store. Here at home, my wireless network is functioning fine. So when I returned from the Genius bar, that's when I did all the steps I mentioned in my original post. At this point I'm not sure how to know whether the iPhone is functioning properly on the network...because some things are working well and other things aren't working at all (e.g., apps that require WiFi).

I'm stumped! The genius bar did offer to swap it out if I did all the steps they asked me to with no resolution.

One good way to troubleshoot and isolate hardware from software issues on the iphone is to do a "restore", "setup as a new phone" (not restore from backup), and do not sync any information (including apps).
I would suggest after you do that, make sure you can connect to your wifi network, with no issues. Then download just the "Remote" app to your iphone.
Then you will have a better idea of what the issue might be.
(Please make sure you sync and import all your information on your iphone before doing this for any possible software issue, if this resolves your issue, you won't be able to use your backup on the computer)

Hope it works!

I'm having the exact same problem. When I activate the Remote app, I can see my iTunes DJ instantaneously, and can request a song, but that's it. The votes show up in iTunes, but I can't direct the song to be played via the iPhone. When the app tries to locate my iTunes Library, it can't. Yet, since I can request any song in my library via iTunes DJ, on some level it can see the library. I've tried all the solutions you did, and gotten nowhere.

The Delicious Library app is able to see my Delicious Library on my computer, so it's something within Remote or iTunes.

Just thought I'd let you know you're not the only one with this issue.

I may have stumbled on the answer to this. At any rate, I was able to get mine working now. First, I went into Preferences in iTunes, and unchecked the "Look for remotes" check box, and clicked on the "Forget All Remotes" box. Then I rechecked the "Look for remotes" box. Next, I went on my iPhone, opened up the Remote app and picked, "Choose another Library." At that point, it showed my iTunes DJ, which was active, and my iPhone library, which was grayed out. I clicked on the Edit button in the top left, and the standard red button opened up next to the grayed out iTunes library. I deleted that, and then tapped on Add Library. The password screen appeared, and then I could see my iPhone in the Devices list in the sidebar of iTunes within seconds. Once I clicked on that, I could enter that password and everything worked fine. I could now control every thing from the iPhone, the way the Remote app was intended to work.

So the secret for me seemed to be clearing any old libraries off of the iPhone. The iPhone sees the iTunes DJ because that playlist allows anyone using an iPhone to request a song, or vote on someone else's request, if you have allowed it in the Settings for that playlist. However, they can only choose or vote, and cannot control any other iTunes functions. But for whatever reason, the way my iPhone signed into the Library itself was corrupted, and erasing that from the iPhone cleared it up for me. I've replaced both the iPhone and the laptop in recent months, so perhaps something got corrupted during one of those transitions.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it will still work tomorrow. At any rate, editing the iPhone library and re-entering the password was a quick and painless procedure, so it wouldn't be a bother to have to do it again.

I have the same problem... The Ipod Touch remote can see and access to my Intel G5 Dj Itunes but cant load the Library anymore. I even dont get prompt by Itune to enter the 4 digit code when I try to Add a new library from the Remote.

With the Windows Laptop - No problem at all...

This is the first time in my entire life where I see an apple product working great on Windows but not with OsX

By the way Firewall off. Tried the "Forget all remotes" function didnt help.

I wish to see a solution or an update soon this remote thing is so great!
